The ordinary elementary school of Regal Street finds its dowdy headmistress, Mrs Johnstone, in extraordinary circumstances after the travails of wartime England. Mrs Johnstone soon realises that the heralded new era of peacetime may not be as welcoming as it seems as she fights to save her school and the future of her students.
