A Fey for Valentines Day
Updated at Feb 14, 2026, 14:20
Sophia never imagined she would be spending Valentine's day at a fantasy ball in the unknown. The holiday has always felt more like an endurance race than a holiday to Sophia Carter. This year it's taking on an entirely new experience. In the heart of New York City, surrounded by happy couples, Sophia wanders Central Park with no particular plans. A eternally single artist she has a horrible case of the holiday blues that has translated into the loss of her artistic muse in the studio. She's hopeful that a walk through the park will rekindle her desire to pick up her paintbrush. But only the sharp ache of loneliness meets her today. Every February fourteenth only reinforces the quiet mocking that happiness is something meant for other people. That belief shatters the moment she finds a mysterious magical fountain- one not found on any map - tucked away beneath bare winter branches with magical flowing waters despite the frigid temperatures. Drawn closer by the sound of distant music and the impossible shimmer of it's running water, Sophia does the one thing she rarely does: acts on impulse. When her fingers brush the surface she is magically transported to another world entirely, Central Park dissolves into falling through velvet darkness, and Sophia is pulled straight through a portal out of a fairy tale- down, sideways, everywhere all at once -until she lands breathless on a marble floor beneath chandeliers of starlight. She's fallen smack dab into the middle of a masquerade ball that doesn't belong to her reality. A Fairy God Mother is there to meet her, but not the good kind. She transforms Sophia into a masked version of herself, dressed in a ballgown as stunning as the stars that light up the ceiling of the castle. Her instructions? Find true love before the clock gives it's last chime at midnight or everyone at the masquerade dies. Before absolute panic can take hold, Sophia is drawn into the dance by a man in a golden mask- a prince, but she does not belong in this realm, and someone lurking in the shadows knows it. The presence stalks her from the edge of the ballroom- watching, dark and inevitable. When he steps into the light, desire and danger blur together as Sophia takes in the stunningly handsome newcomer in a black mask. She must choose one or sacrifice both. How can she ever make such a choice?
