Time moves at its own pace. When it moves, it turns everything upside down and doesn’t even give a person a chance to recover. In a way, the deeds done by a person inevitably come back in some form. This is exactly what was happening with Manvir now.Perhaps Manvir, or his family, never imagined that the person they deemed unworthy would one day be the one from whom they would have to seek justice. Zarina sat quietly, wiping her tears, and once again got lost in the incomplete dreams of her life.Manvir’s wife was also given a chance to speak in her defense. If Manvir, despite having a wife, could have relationships with other women, then why couldn’t she? When Manvir couldn’t stay committed to his wife, his children, or his relationships, how could he point fingers at someone else’s character? She said, “I only responded to him in his own language.”“Your Honor,” she continued, “I only tried to find a little happiness in my life from my old companion. What wrong did I do, Your Honor? Merely giving birth to children doesn’t fulfill all responsibilities. He searches for a new woman every day. Who knows how many homes he has ruined? When Manvir does all this, is it right? If it’s right for him, then how am I wrong?”Manvir stood with his eyes lowered, perhaps with nothing left to say in his defense. The lawyers were engaged in heated arguments, hurling accusations and questions at each other to weaken the opposing side and strengthen their own. But Zarina was lost in her thoughts, somewhere far away. The lawyers’ arguments concluded. The judge called for order, ended the court proceedings, and set the next hearing date.Lost in her thoughts, Zarina left the courtroom, got into her car, and hurriedly drove home. Sweat beads formed on her forehead, and her heart grew restless. In just a few moments, it felt like Zarina was losing control over herself. She went to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water, and returned to her room, collapsing onto the bed.Memories of her past life flashed before Zarina’s eyes. So much had changed. What she had imagined and what had happened were worlds apart. Suddenly, darkness seemed to envelop her. Lost in her thoughts, Zarina drifted back to her old life, to the time when she had enrolled in the twelfth grade.---Life was unfaithful, or perhaps the heart turned dishonest, The nights were truly dark, or perhaps the light grew arrogant, The stars laughed, becoming confidants of loneliness, Taking my soul, they tore it from my body, This favor of yours, dear friend, weighs heavy on my heart, The foolish heart fell into boundless love, Calling you mine, today even my body feels lifeless.---Zarina was an extremely beautiful and gentle girl. With blue eyes, fair skin, a slender frame, and a long neck, she looked like a fairy. Anyone who saw Zarina couldn’t take their eyes off her.Zarina was so cheerful that no matter how sad someone was, just one glance at her would make them forget their sorrows and feel compelled to smile. Zarina’s family was Muslim, but they also visited the Gurudwara. Her father owned about four acres of land where he farmed, and alongside farming, he and Zarina’s uncle ran a business in the city. However, they mostly lived in the village.Zarina had just enrolled in the twelfth grade. She was very intelligent and excelled in her studies.Zarina had two very close friends at school: Sweep and Japleen. The three were extremely cheerful and always together, coming to school and returning home as a trio. They seemed closer than sisters.Manvir belonged to a prominent landowning family in Zarina’s village. He had previously lived at his maternal grandparents’ house. With inherited property and the freedom of living away from home, he was reckless and flaunted his wealth. One day, as Zarina and her friends were walking to school, a speeding car passed by them. Since it was an unpaved road, they were covered in dust and dirt. Zarina shouted to stop the car, but it sped off like lightning and soon reached the paved road.Zarina, Sweep, and Japleen wiped the dust from their faces with their dupattas. They were furious inside but could do nothing since they didn’t know who was driving the car. The three turned back toward home. Zarina was especially angry.Sweep and Japleen tried to calm her down as they walked her home.---When I find the time, I’ll write my own fate, With every breath, I’ll pen your mention, My journey begins with you and ends with you, Even my final message will bear your name, Squeezing every drop of my blood, I’ll boldly write your name on this heart.---To be continued...
