Play Pretend
Updated at Mar 19, 2026, 03:18
The story begins with Jess, a human, who is the main character, serving at the coffee shop where she works. She attends to a table of men who try to harass her but Mark, her co-worker–and a were– steps in and saves her, getting the men kicked out in the process. After work, Mark offers to walk Jess home and, still shaken by the events of the day, she agrees. On their way, however, A white van pulls up with none other than the men who tried to harass Jess and they kidnap her. Jess is blindfolded, bound and taken to a decrepit building where a powerful, older woman makes her a proposition. Mathilde Harris, matriarch of the Harris Family, the most powerful and feared family in the city, has a problem: her daughter has gone missing, right before she has to be married off to Jonas Black. Jess bears a striking and uncanny resemblance to Chelsea, Mathilde's daughter, and Mathilde threatens Jess into agreeing to pose as Chelsea until the latter is found, using Mark as leverage. Left with no choice and scared, Jess agrees to do as Mathilde orders. But playing pretend isn't as easy as Jess thinks it would be. The entire Harris family are manipulative. Not only does she have to navigate who is friend or foe, the were she is betrothed to, Jonas Black, is unfeeling. But that isn't all; Jess's life is about to be more complicated when she gets captured by the Shadow Pack, the Harris' sworn enemies. She is torn between the devil and the deep, blue sea. Will she choose to go back to the Harris' and risk a loveless marriage? Or stay a prisoner all the days of her life?
