What happens when two unlikely souls—one fighting to stay alive, the other without a reason to live—miraculously collide, forcing one another to face sorrow and regret? A powerful journey begins for both, transforming pain and suffering into compassion, forgiveness and transcendent love.
A young Hawaiian woman in shock and grief, impulsively moves to Italy to care for a dying man. Hospice nurse Lulua'ina, aka Lulu, has never had a patient quite like the old man. Pops, an 85-year-old Italian American millionaire and founder of Fig Olive Oil, is near death in his Tuscan villa. He harbors a 60-year-old secret. Lulu, being half Japanese-Hawaiian and half German, looks stunningly similar to the woman Pops cannot forget. Lulu's appearance compels him to tell her about Kiyomi, the daughter of a Japanese general he loved just after World War II.
During three months together, lucid memories and dreams return to Pops and Lulu. The old man can see, hear, smell, remember Kiyomi vividly again—and the broken promises he made to her. Painful regret overwhelms him. He is tormented over abandoning such pure, innocent love. Pops' suffering softens Lulu, allowing sweet dreams of her baby girl, who died six months earlier, to surface. Love flows into her heart as she feels, smells, touches her three month old Healani again. Once angry and hopeless, buried memories of her husband, her childhood sweetheart, emerge too—letting Lulu feel the pure love they once shared.
Lulu even considers forgiving her husband, who had an affair. Yet Lulu also befriends Pauli, Pops' third son, The antithesis of her stoic husband, playful Pauli makes Lulu laugh. Being a New York playboy, Lulu doesn't take Pauli's advances seriously. After Pops dies, Lulu returns to Honolulu, and Pauli to Manhattan, both deeply in love with the other.
