Mysteries After the WarUpdated at Oct 4, 2024, 13:09
The story revolves around Kierien Obinna Ezeudu, a young boy who after the Nigerian civil war was left with a herculean task of growing up alone with his mother and the responsibilities of being the only child of his parents. His father a secondary school principal joined the Biafran forces and was declared missing and presumably dead after the war.
Kierien while facing life without his father later has to experience many mysterious things about his life which is embedded in their family’s heritage. His ancestor Ezedimbu was cursed by a powerful priestess named Ndologwu for a very long time ago to be turning to a wolf at least once in a year. So it passed down to every first born of his lineage down to Kierien.
Helped by an old man Nnaji his grandfather’s friend, Kierien, out from many circumstances has to unravel the many mysteries revolving around him. Also, he has to keep his par with his family and friends in order not to expose the age long secret. Though reluctantly, Kierien has to use his powers after turning to a wolf to save Adannia (his heartthrob) and her family from armed robbers. Also, he saved his late friend’s family lineage after seeing him (Odidika) in a dream vision.
After much pressure, Kierien revealed his secrets and mysteries to his friend Isaac. He later got to know that his grandfather Ezedimbu reincarnated in him to fulfill and accomplish his mission. Kierien after making a mistake of eating a dog meat which is abominable to him and his community mistakenly killed Osondu, the current Ndologwu priestess’ son. This the priestess saw as revenge from Ezedimbu on the old Ndologwu.
Finally Kierien has to break the curse on his family as he met Mmasinachi, a reincarnate like Kierien as well. Their two ancestors whom they reincarnated from got attached in the past and they made a pact to come back in their next world and break the curse on Ezedimbu.
The novel ended on a good note, Kierien married Adannia and he traveled to Cameroon to study. He left his paper factory business to his mother at Umuopi. Laura is happily married, Isaac working as a full government worker. Nnaji peacefully died of old age but still holds his stance-that Kierien’s father is not yet dead. Which makes us still gasping for more- is Udobi Ezeudu still alive?
Through the first person narrator point of view, the author used Kierien to narrate the story of his life with every experience piece by piece unraveled in a smooth but more tensed fiction.
A novel fully grounded on the background of tradition and history, laced into the genre of magic realism.
