In 1923, Sebastian, a textile magnate, meets Adeline in his East End bookshop during a thunderstorm. Fascinated, he insists on seeing her again despite their opposing worlds, but she refuses. He perseveres, inviting her to dinner, but an argument breaks out when he hurts her pride by offering to "help" her.
