1The phone going off woke me with a start, scrambling to untangle my legs from the sheets. I had fallen asleep. Butit was worth it , before crushing I had felt drained physically and emotionally. I stretched reaching for my phone onthe bedside table my muscles clacking with a pop. I needed a break but my needs wouldn't let me. I worked six amto three pm at a diner located in a downtown alley in downtown Newyork ,then I spent five minutes in another blockto a local store where I restocked the shelves for another three hours . And by the time I unlocked the door to mysmall one bedroom apartment I was ready to sleep and never wake up ,sometimes forgetting to eat like today mystomach growled. Macy my coworker and the owner of the diner had given me a cup of tea and a baguette and thatwas - according to the time on the phone twelve hours ago- I was already used to it- going without food for longhours - in my attempt to save the meagre earnings to pay for my degree and ensuring my mother had a roof over herhead and together with my rent I had to defer yet another year at the university where I studied business majoring infinance. I was good with numbers ,always has been my mother prided herself with that fact to her church friends,but they knew and i know and i would bet my lucky leather jacket my mother knows that i was worthless. Thecreaking stairs and sometimes leaky roof was enough proof. Life wasn't like this ,life became like this my junior high,when my father - our familys breadwinner- become just another person my mother married and the truth wasrevealed , he's not my father. The truth that uprooted our whole lives turning it upside down , squishing my futureand dreams down. I prayed it was a bad dream ,I wished for it . Certainly my mother did despite her livingcircumstances she still tried to keep it all together. For a while there I blamed her but I grew out of it . Of course I didall my friends left me . We couldn't afford the same pleasures anymore. But Alex stuck with me ,he helped me enrollto the university with the money after selling all the unnecessary stuff. I love him,he become my best friend.
