Sofia Valenti is good at two things, staying invisible and understanding numbers as an accountant.
As a financial analyst at De Luca Enterprises, she has spent three years being exactly what the company needs, precise, discreet, and completely unremarkable.
Then her supervisor hands her a suspicious account and tells her to audit it
What Sofia finds in it is the proof of a global mafia network including money laundering routes, shell companies connected to criminal enterprises in twelve countries, and at the centre of all of it, one name.
Lorenzo De Luca
She goes home and for some foolish reason, tells her friend about what she finds out only to discover that Lucy, who is also a reporter, had released the information in the morning as a cover story. She also revealed that her source works directly with the finance books in De Luca Enterprises
It takes Lorenzo's mafia partners to put 2 together, ask about the accountant and get her address so they go after Lucy (the reporter) first then they go after Sofia.
In the midst of everything, Lorenzo shows up and demands that they both be released after promising to be the scapegoat if anything happens but the higher ups give them an ultimatum, Lucy quits her job while Lorenzo and Sofia get married to ensure her silence, making sure Lorenzo protects her from anyone looking for evidence.
They all disagree at first but unfortunately it is not an option but a command they all have to live with.
Being a well known figure, Lorenzo proposes they act in public, a ruse to make the public think they have an ongoing relationship.
She moves into his house but Lorenzo De Luca's world is nothing like she imagined.
She has to deal with his mother who is willing to do anything to throw her out, to the point where she eventually tries enticing him with the prospects of other women.
Sofia and Lorenzo grow closer over time as they live together, learn each other's habits and go on planned dates for public interest.
And then there is someone else, Marcus Webb, the charming corporate lawyer who pursues her and becomes their Lawyer when an inspector files charges against her husband.
In the midst of the legal investigations and court dealings, the Ferraro family from Naples launches a brutal assault on Lorenzo's empire and takes Sofia as their weapon against him; she will discover the most terrifying truth of all. That the most dangerous man in New York does not negotiate for territory or money or power.
He negotiates for her.
