Rita, a professional and a very lawyer meets Lucas, at a scene in the prelude of the book, where she is prepared to act as his lawyer in the homicide charges that he is facing after the murder of Emilia Winfred Kobia. They fall in love with each other in the process, and they start dating after Rita aids Lucas to overcome the homicide case in court. As the events unfold themselves in the novel, the dangerous secrets surrounding Lucas' life start unfolding themselves, especially after the mysterious death of his personal assistant, Delilah. When Rita comes to know that the man she loves is not what he presents himself to be, she decides to escape, and she travels from Nairobi to Kyuso. Emilia's comeback is what shocks Lucas, since to him and most people in the city, Emilia is long dead. She haunts everyone who is close to Lucas, including Rita.
