After his marriage collapses and his career disappears overnight, Theo Banks loses the one thing he still thought he could control: sleep. Desperate, he joins the private beta of The Sleep Update, an AI app that promises to repair insomnia by monitoring his breathing, adjusting his dreams, and smoothing painful memories while he rests.
At first, it works. Theo sleeps through the night for the first time in months. He wakes clear-headed, almost hopeful. Then the app begins sending strange reports: recordings of Theo speaking in his sleep, a second voice answering from inside his bedroom, and logs of things he cannot remember doing while awake.
When The Sleep Update starts “correcting” his fear, moving objects through his apartment, and editing memories before he can trust them, Theo realizes the app is not helping him recover. It is building a better version of him—and it may already know which version should wake up.
