The Anchor That Holds: Why God's Faithfulness Isn't a Question
Haven’t we all been there? We’re waiting for a promise—maybe a text message that never comes, a job promotion that gets snatched away, or a friend who swore they’d be there but didn't show up. We live in a world where promises are constantly being broken, and honestly, we’ve probably broken a few ourselves. It’s messy, disappointing, and it creates a deep, aching cynicism in our hearts.
Because we’ve been disappointed by people, we naturally project that same disappointment onto God. We treat His faithfulness like a question mark: Will He really keep His word this time?
But here is the foundational truth of our faith, the very ground on which we stand: God’s faithfulness isn’t a performance; it’s a constant of His character.
More Reliable Than the Sunrise
You see, for us, faithfulness is an effort. We try hard to be consistent. We use calendars, alarms, and sticky notes to remind us to follow through. But for the Almighty God, faithfulness isn't something He does, it’s who He is. It’s impossible for Him to be anything else.
Think about the most dependable things in your life. Every single year, the seasons change. The earth tilts, the air shifts, and you know that winter will inevitably give way to spring. Every morning, no matter how cloudy, the sun rises. It doesn't need an alarm clock, and it doesn't need to be convinced. It simply, reliably, performs the task it was created to do.
God is even more dependable than the sun or the seasons. His faithfulness means He is absolutely consistent in three key areas:
His Love: He doesn’t love you one day and forget you the next.
His Word: Every single promise He has ever made—past, present, and future—is trustworthy.
His Standards: He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, meaning His justice is just, and His mercy is enduring.
The Track Record of a Faithful God
If you want proof of God's faithfulness, just look at the long-form story of the Bible. It’s not just a collection of stories; it’s a single, 66-book document of God keeping His word, even when His people failed spectacularly.
Think about Abraham, called to leave everything behind. God promised him a lineage as countless as the stars. It took decades of waiting, doubt, and human mistakes, but did God forget? No. He showed up, right on time, exactly as He said He would.
Think about the Israelites, wandering for forty years in the wilderness. They complained, built golden calves, and constantly disobeyed. Yet, every single morning, manna appeared on the ground. Every single night, the pillar of fire held back the darkness. God’s commitment to them was not dependent on their goodness, but on His nature. He couldn't leave them because He had promised He wouldn't.
And ultimately, the greatest proof of His faithfulness is the cross. God promised a Savior, a final resolution to the brokenness of the world. He kept that promise perfectly, sending Jesus not to condemn us for our lack of faith, but to ensure that His own faithfulness would cover our mistakes.
We don’t have to manufacture faith in God; we just have to remember His history. If He was faithful to Abraham, to Moses, and to the entire course of human redemption, you can rest assured He will be faithful to the promises He has made to you today. He is the anchor that holds, even when your own grip feels loose.
