When Heaven Was Silent

A Life Story of Pain, Faith, and HopeChapter 1 — The Little Girl Who Had to Grow Up Too SoonI was born into a beautiful family. My grandparents had twelve children, and my father was the first son.According to the stories I was told, my father expected his first child to be a boy. But when I was born a girl, he began to think that perhaps all the children he would have would be girls. My grandfather reassured him and told him not to worry. He blessed him and said that boys would be more than girls among his children. And that blessing became true. I grew up as the only girl among my siblings, with three brothers. But life would soon teach me that being the first child came with responsibilities I could never have imagined. When I was seven years old, my life changed forever. In 2001, I lost my father. At the time my father died, my mother was pregnant with my youngest brother. His death left my mother with the enormous responsibility of raising us and making sure we had food and survived. My mother went through a lot. She worked hard and did everything she could to take care of us. Life became a struggle, and as the first child, I knew I could not simply sit and watch my mother carry everything alone.Even though I was still a child, I began helping my mother in whatever way I could. I helped with the farm and assisted her with different things so that my younger brothers could have something to eat. There were times when life became so difficult that school was no longer certain. Sometimes I went to school, and sometimes I could not, because we were struggling to find money just to survive.I was growing up in a world where childhood and responsibility were becoming mixed together.I did not understand everything that was happening around me, but I understood one thing:We had to survive. My mother kept fighting for us, and I tried to help her however I could. There were moments when life felt unfair and moments when I wondered why so much hardship had come into our lives so early. But even then, God had not abandoned us.I could not see what the future would bring. I did not know how many more storms were waiting for me. I did not know how much pain and loss I would experience as I grew older.I was only a little girl trying to help her family survive. But somewhere deep inside me, a seed of faith had already been planted.I would later learn that even when heaven seems silent, God can still be working in ways we cannot see.
