I WAS JUST SIXUpdated at Aug 18, 2026, 10:29
Esme was just six when her world fell apart.
Once, she had known nothing but warmth a loving mother, a father, four older brothers, and a grandmother who made their house feel like home. But when her mother dies, that happiness disappears with her, leaving Esme with a grief far too heavy for a child to understand.
And then, something changes.
Her father, once the man she trusted most, begins to look at her differently. His affection turns distant. His silence becomes unbearable. Esme grows up wondering what she did wrong, carrying a wound she cannot name and a question no one is willing to answer.
At eight, a stepmother enters her life, and with her comes a new chapter filled with secrets, complicated relationships, and events Esme will spend years trying to understand.
But some families are built on truths that are never spoken.
As Esme grows older, she begins to realize that the story she has been told about her family may not be the truth at all. Every memory holds a missing piece. Every silence hides a secret. And the people she has spent her entire life trying to understand may have been hiding the biggest truth of all. Because sometimes, the hardest thing about losing your mother isn't learning how to live without her. It's discovering that the life you knew before losing her may never have been what you believed.
She was just six. She didn't know the truth.
But the truth knew her.
