There are doors that should remain closed, names that should never be spoken, and mirrors that should never be looked into after midnight. For seventeen-year-old Aria Vale, mirrors have always been strange. She doesn't know why. She simply knows that she has never liked them. As a child, Aria would refuse to sleep in rooms with large mirrors. She hated walking past them at night. She hated the feeling that sometimes came over her when she caught her reflection unexpectedly, as though the person staring back at her was studying her instead of simply copying her. June knows about Aria's fear of mirrors, but she thinks it is simply one of Aria's strange habits. That night, after everyone has gone to sleep, Aria wakes up. She hears a sound. A soft tapping. Three knocks. Then silence. Three more knocks. The sound is coming from her bedroom mirror. Aria initially convinces herself it is probably a branch hitting the window. But when she turns toward the mirror, she realizes something is wrong. Her reflection is standing perfectly still. Aria is sitting on her bed. The reflection is standing.
