The Weight of Returning
Updated at Feb 10, 2025, 03:19
My name is Cara Morgan or so I thought, and I have always believed I was ordinary—just another girl trying to navigate life in the uplands. Growing up, we were made to understand there were other creatures; we were taught the history of the witches and the demons. I always knew of their existence, but I also knew I was ordinary. When strange things begin to happen—objects moving without touch, whispers I can’t explain, and my dark hair streaking with highlights of platinum—I start to question everything. What I did not know is that I am the last of Eryndor’s true bloodline, a descendant of witches whose power comes not just from magic but from their bond with the people they’re meant to protect. My birth mother, the high queen and priestess of the witches, was assassinated on the night of my birth by a corrupt faction of witches who enthroned a false queen, a royal who was not of the true blood. The new queen, Selvya, though powerful, is not of true blood, and her connection to the witches of Eryndor is flawed, and instead of empowering the people, her rule drains their magic, plunging the kingdom into darkness and despair. Eryndor is withering under her reign, its forests fading, its skies forever clouded. Cara is the only one who can save Eryndor. But claiming her rightful place would mean leaving the life she’s known, stepping into a dangerous world she barely understands, and confronting the truth of her bloodline. The weight of Eryndor’s survival rests on her shoulders, but what if she doesn’t want to bear it? Will Cara awaken to her destiny and become Elara or will Eryndor be lost to darkness forever?
