BOUNDLESS: A Heart With No Boundaries
Updated at Sep 27, 2026, 15:48
She arrived in New York with $112, a taped U-Haul box portfolio, and a dress with no hem.Lena Cole is twenty-two, from Ottawa, Canada. Lowertown. Rideau Street. Small apartment above a laundromat where the heat clanks all winter and never stops. Her mother Diane Cole is French-Canadian and Irish-Canadian, single mom, sews winter coat alterations and prom dresses for twenty dollars on a Singer sewing machine that needs kicking to start. No fashion connections. No money. Just Ottawa winter, thrift stores, and rent due on the first. Lena has big curly brown hair she never straightened because Ottawa humidity wins, a cracked iPhone 6 from her cousin in Gatineau, and a white dress sketch that is truly hers. White. No hem. No boundary. No end. Fabric that pools like melting snow on Bank Street in March. She calls it BOUNDLESS. Love with no boundaries. She first sewed a version for a Barbie at nine using her mother's scrap white lining. After thirty hours on Greyhound from Ottawa bus terminal, Lena has $112 left in her TD Canada Trust account. Sixty-eight dollars for the ticket, thirty-five per night at YWCA Brooklyn where the radiator hissed and the girl above smoked, six fifty for coffee and banana mistake, because poutine is cheaper in Ottawa and she regrets it. She wears a Value Village black turtleneck eight dollars from Bank Street, black pants hemmed herself even though she hates hems, white sneakers cleaned with toothpaste, Old Navy puff that is too big. She carries a U-Haul box cut and taped FRAGILE as a portfolio. At 9 AM she has an interview at BLACK Atelier. Madison and 58th. Black glass. No sign. Just a B cut into steel. If you know, you know. If you don't, you are not supposed to be there. BLACK is the biggest fashion house in Manhattan. Started by Thomas Black in a garage in Detroit with $200 and a Singer that also needed kicking. Thomas died. His son Ethan Black took it and turned it into nine hundred million. Ethan is thirty-two, billionaire, coldest man in Manhattan fashion. He comes to work at 4:30 AM every day. He remembers every stitch. He feels nothing. He has not smiled in a Vogue interview since 2019. He built walls. Glass walls in his atelier. Walls around his heart.Lena is applying to work at the company. That is what BLACK calls interns. The intern everyone ignores. Fifteen dollars an hour. Twenty hours a week. You make coffee. You carry bolts. You do not design. You are never asked to design. You do not speak before 10 AM. You do not touch a sample without gloves. If you do, you are fired. The receptionist with hair ironed straight looks at her sneakers and gives her a badge that says INTERN APPLICANT. Black badge. White letters. Like a warning. She goes to the thirty-second floor. It is silent. No music. Only scissors. Twenty designers in black. Tables with chalk. Racks of black, white, red. A smoked glass office at the end where you cannot see inside. That is Ethan's office.Maya from HR is small with glasses and sensible shoes and a clipboard. She flips through Lena's portfolio fast. One, two, three, four. Student work. Then she stops at number twelve. The white dress with no hem. What is this, Maya asks. Boundless, Lena says. Love with no boundaries. No hem. No end. How would you construct it. Bias cut, one piece, weighted side seam. No hem means no one tells you where to stop.Maya takes the sketch and goes to the smoked glass office. She knocks once. Opens. Closes. Lena stands alone with her $112 and her taped box and her sneakers that slip on the marble. The clock says 9:14. The door opens. Maya comes out pale. Then Ethan Black. He is taller than photos. Photos make him cold. In person he is colder in a different way, like a building that keeps heat inside but does not show it. Black shirt. Black pants. No tie. Hair black, cut short. Eyes that do not blink enough. He does not look at Lena. He looks at the sketch in his hand. Her sketch. The white dress with no hem. He walks to the table. Puts it down carefully exactly where it was. He looks at it. Who taught you bias cut, he says without looking at her. My mother. She sews winter coats in Ottawa. And YouTube. Mostly YouTube. How much money do you have. One hundred and twelve dollars, she says because she is tired of lying. My father started with $200, he says. I know. My father had a Singer that needed kicking. Mine does too. Something in his face moves. Not a smile. A crack near the eye. He remembers his father. He remembers $200. He turns to Maya. Hire her. As what. Coffee Girl. She starts tomorrow. 4:30 AM. He picks up the Boundless sketch and walks back to his office. He takes it. He keeps it. The door closes silent. Maya exhales. Coffee Girl is intern. Fifteen an hour. Twenty hours. Black badge. Come at 4:30 AM or fired.
