Ugonma's father was the village Chief Priest. Her Father Akukalia was the Chief Priest of Ideani, the most powerful deity in their village of Umuabo. Although Christianity had come to their land, most of the people were still pagans. The women , young boys and girls were the only ones the message of a saviour who died to save them , made sense to. The older men and women were still so seeped in their old ways that they refused to consider a brand new religion. Ugonma fell in love with the son of the village cathechist and both parents refused to consent to the marriage. The Chief Priest insisted that his future son in law must worship the god he worships- Ideani, while the Cathechist emphatically said his daughter cannot be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. In his estimation, the daughter of a pagan was a pagan herself. The two lovers, Ugonma and Alozie, after making concerted efforts to convince their families to get married, without success, finally decide to run away together and unfortunately fell into the hands of human traffickers who sold them separately. Ugonma was sold to a white man from Italy while Alozie was sold to an Arab from Libya. The two go through a lot of travails and much suffering but they are finally reunited in Europe and they rediscover their love and finally get married.
