Melissa leaves Burlington with one thing in mind: finding a job that will help her mother provide for the family. With Kenny's school needs adding to their financial worries, she is determined to do what she can, even if it means leaving home and starting somewhere new. Her plans take an unexpected turn when Aunt Martha refuses to accommodate her. With nowhere else to go, Melissa turns to Sasha, her childhood friend, who offers her a place to stay and helps her look for work. When Sasha arranges a trial opportunity for her at a local supermarket, Melissa sees it as a chance to finally get on her feet. But finding her place in a new city is not as easy as she had hoped. Between unfamiliar surroundings, the demands of work and the responsibilities she still carries at home, Melissa must learn to stand on her own without losing sight of the people she left behind.
