A ROSE AMONG THORNS
Updated at Aug 31, 2026, 05:26
A story where my silence became guilt, my tears became manipulation, and my very presence became a threat.I was accused of things I could never prove I had not done.Words were whispered when I wasn’t in the room.Stories changed when they reached different ears.I used to believe that cruelty announced itself. I thought it came with shouting, slammed doors, and words sharp enough to leave wounds you could point to.I was wrong.Sometimes, cruelty smiles. But perhaps the cruelest part was not what was said about me.It was watching those words travel. From one mouth to another. From one heart to another.Until the children began carrying pieces of a story they had never witnessed. They were being taught how to see me.And I was being given no chance to tell them why.Food became something I had to wonder about.Days passed when hunger was easier to hide than humiliation.I learned how to make myself smaller. How to swallow words along with hunger. How to cry quietly when there was another life depending on me.And all the while, the child inside my belly knew nothing of the war being fought around us.She only knew the sound of my heartbeat.Perhaps that is why I survived.Because every time I thought I had reached the end of myself, I felt that tiny reminder beneath my ribs, “ YOU ARE NOT ALONE.I was fighting to keep the truth alive.Because when enough people are told the same lie, the truth begins to sound like madness. And when a woman is painted as the enemy long enough, people stop asking what she did. They only ask why she hasn’t apologized. This is not the story they told about me.It is the story I was almost forbidden to tell. There are nights I will never forget. There are things my child will one day read and finally understand. She will understand why her mother became quiet. Why she learned to survive rooms where she was not wanted. Why some smiles frightened her more than shouting ever could. And perhaps, when she reaches the final page, she will finally understand the greatest secret of all:I did not survive because they were kind to me.I survived because, somewhere beneath all the lies, I still knew who I was.
