Hush, Little Wolf
Updated at Oct 25, 2026, 02:30
Reena Marlowe, aged 25, is the head librarian for the small town of Hollow Creek. In addition to being Reena Marlowe, she is known as Reena Alder, the sole survivor of the family of wolves thought by the packs to have been exterminated sixteen years ago during the Alder purge. Each day she makes a suppressant tea to subdue her wolf and suppress her smell and each night she hums the lullaby her mother used to sing to her, the only thing she has left from her family. When a rogue wolf starts killing around town and leaves an ominous message at the library door, the Hale pack comes into town. The Alpha-heir of their pack and the appointed Hunter, Cassian Hale, aged 30, has been searching for the “Alder ghost” his entire life and blames the Alders for the death of his older brother during the purge. He picks up something in her scent he can’t identify, and when her singing soothes one of his wolves, he becomes suspicious. With the power of the Hale Trust over the town, he demands access to the library’s basement vault after hours.Reena, forced into intimacy with a man who vowed to kill her kind, she eventually leads him away from the Alder records while developing a crush on him. The pack goes into the library and gets stuck inside due to a storm, at which point their wolves realize that they are meant to be mates. Cassian, aware of the potential relationship but thinking it has to be with a human, rejects it with cold vows to murder the Alder ghost. Meanwhile, Reena begins to show signs of her gift, a family power to soothe wolves, when her tea begins running out, pulling the pack towards her and arousing the suspicion of Cassian’s betrothed, Selene. After a fight breaks out at the library and Reena half-shifts to save Cassian, they discover a secret compartment in the vault that holds the original Council ruling saying that the Alders were not guilty, placed there by Reena’s parents before they died. Cassian realizes who Reena is and rather than killing her, he kisses her.And thus they revealed the truth. The Alders had been the Keepers of the Accord, keepers of the true history of the packs, and Cassian’s father, the current Alpha, killed the last Alpha to take his place. The Alders could reveal it all, and their ability could strip him of his power over the pack, so he declared them rogues, killed them off in one night, and altered the record. Cassian’s brother Rowan was unwilling to assist, and far from dying like the Alpha had said he would, fled, taking nine-year-old Reena with him, renaming her Marlowe, and sending her the tea all along. When Cassian sent a leaf of that very tea to his pack’s healer, his father knew the recipe, took Rowan captive, and tracked the scent to Hollow Creek.Caught between loyalty and love, with Selene threatening Reena and the Alpha looming, Reena ends it and flees in order to save Cassian. The Alpha gives the order to kill her by the next full moon, using Rowan’s life to blackmail Cassian into doing it. Cassian drops the knife and defies his father in front of the Accord Council. Reena uses the ancient blood-right laws that she knows by heart and, as Rowan is freed and speaks up, hums her mother’s lullaby and frees the pack from the Alpha’s control. The father is revealed, Selene steps down, and Cassian takes over as Alpha.A year passes and the Alder name returns to the pack’s memorial stone. Reena stops quieting her wolf and allows it to sing.
