PURITY

PROLOGUEPURITYLamentations 1:2She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her…Lagos never sleeps. It breathes—loud, restless, unforgiving.Even in the dead of night, when the streetlights flicker and generators hum like tired hearts, the city is still awake… watching… listening… remembering. And somewhere inside it—Purity was breaking.Again.She sat on the cold tiled floor, her back pressed against the wall as though it could hold her together. Her fingers trembled—not from fear anymore, no… she had outgrown fear. This was something else.Something deeper.Something hollow. The room smelled faintly of sweat, cheap perfume, and regret. It clung to her skin like a second layer she couldn’t peel off no matter how hard she scrubbed. Her name was Purity. And it almost made her laugh.A dry, bitter sound escaped her lips before she could stop it. It echoed in the silence, sharp and broken—just like her.Purity.Whoever named her must have been dreaming.Or lying.Because there was nothing pure about her anymore. Not her body. Not her thoughts. Not even her soul—if she still had one.She pulled her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around herself, rocking slightly like it might quiet the storm inside her. But it didn’t.It never did.Faces flashed behind her eyes—some she remembered, some she tried to forget. Voices followed.Whispers.Promises.Lies.“I love you.”“Trust me.”“You’ll be fine.”All of it… poison. Her nails dug into her skin, but she didn’t flinch. Pain like this? She understood it. It was clean. Honest.Unlike everything else. Her gaze drifted to the small Bible lying across the room, abandoned, untouched, almost… mocking her.She hadn’t opened it in years.Didn’t see the point. What could it possibly say to someone like her? What comfort could it offer a girl who had been used, broken, and discarded so many times she had stopped counting?A girl who had learned early that God was either silent…Or absent.“Don’t,” she muttered under her breath, though nothing had spoken.Still, the words lingered in her mind. That verse. The one she had heard once, long ago.Something about weeping.About being alone.About lovers who turned into strangers. Her lips trembled.“Of course,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “Of course that would be me.”Tears slipped down her cheeks, slow at first… then faster, until she couldn’t stop them.No one came.No one ever did.Not when she cried. Not when she screamed. Not even when she begged. And certainly not now.Purity pressed her forehead against her knees, her body shaking as the quiet sobs turned violent, uncontrollable.Alone.That was the truth of her life. Not the abuse. Not the hatred. Not even the darkness growing inside her.But this—This emptiness. This aching, suffocating loneliness that no touch, no voice, no presence had ever been able to fill. She lifted her head slowly, eyes red, expression hardened once more.Because she knew something now.Something she had learned the hard way.If no one was coming…Then she didn’t need anyone. Not people. Not love. Not even God.Her tears dried, leaving behind something colder.Something sharper.Something dangerous. And in that moment, Purity made a silent decision—If she was already ruined…Then she might as well live like it.
