Mara wants evidence that will destroy Heliotrope, identify Elias's killers, and stop Project Undertow before thousands of people trapped in Veyra's underground network are drowned or executed. Personally, she risks becoming the dependent, managed asset she has spent her life refusing to be, while Dorian risks losing the one person who can expose the conspiracy if she discovers he has lied to her. If they fail, corrupt NID officials will activate Undertow, erase witnesses, and blame the deaths on Heliotrope alone.
Opening hook
Mara wakes bound to a chair in a sealed Glassward apartment, her false identity burned and Dorian Vale cleaning blood from a knife across the room. He plays a recording of her last encrypted call to the NID, then places a marriage license beside her cuffed hand and tells her she has until midnight to become his wife or die as an enemy of Heliotrope. Her handler orders her through a hidden earpiece to accept, steal Dorian's access key, and trust no one.
