The virus causes one who has it to commit terrible crimes (murder, rape, theft, etc) for that moment of adrenaline fuels the dark matter until it consumes the user completely. That was the only thing they had to do... until he walked into her life. Elleck was told of "fated beings" in training but she wasn't going to be fated to a weak, Earth human. Her fated is destined to be the death of her and she will do whatever it takes to avoid that.
