The Weaver of WhispersTheme: The courage found in the spaces between reality and imagination.

Chapter 1: The Colour of DustThe world was supposed to be green. Naku knew this because her grandmother whispered about it in the cellar, away from the ears of the Watchers. But to Naku’s eyes, the village of Oakhaven was merely forty shades of slate.Naku sat on the edge of the dry well, swinging her feet. In her mind, she wasn't alone.“He’s standing behind you, isn't he?” she whispered to the empty air.In the corner of her mind’s eye, a shimmer formed. It wasn't a ghost; it was too solid for that. It was Kaelen. He stood seven feet tall, his cape billowing in a wind that didn't exist. His armour was the deep, impossible blue of a twilight sky—a colour Naku had never actually seen, but one she had invented in the safety of her dreams.“The perimeter is compromised, Little Weaver,” Kaelen’s voice echoed in her head. It sounded like the crackle of a warm fire."It’s just the Fog, Kaelen," Naku muttered, kicking a stone. "It’s always here."“No,” Kaelen replied, his hand resting on the hilt of a sword made of solidified light. “The Fog is hungry today. It moves with intent.”Naku looked up. He was right. The Grey Fog, usually a stagnant mist that clung to the rooftops, was swirling. It was thickening around the Elder’s house, turning the wood from a dull grey to a translucent, ghostly white. As she watched, a corner of the roof simply... vanished. Not broken, not fallen—erased.Fear, cold and sharp, spiked in Naku’s chest. The stories were true. The world wasn't just losing its colour; it was losing its substance."Kaelen," Naku whispered, her voice trembling. "What do I do? I’m just a kid. I can't fight the nothingness."The imaginary knight knelt beside her. Even though he wasn't "real," the air around him felt ten degrees warmer. He looked her in the eye, his gaze glowing with the sparks of a thousand stars.“You didn't just imagine a soldier, Naku. You imagined a shield. Now, stand behind me, and let us see if the Fog can swallow light.”Naku stood. She reached out her hand, and for the first time in her life, she didn't just feel a thought—she felt the faint, tingly static of Kaelen’s gauntlet against her palm.Chapter 2: The Edge of the MapThe scream that tore through the village wasn't human. It was the sound of reality itself splintering. Naku watched in horror as the village well—the heavy stone centre of their lives—turned into a smear of static and then blinked out of existence."Run, Naku!" her mother shouted from the doorway of their cottage. But her mother’s hands were already turning translucent, the hem of her apron fraying into grey smoke.“Do not look back,” Kaelen’s voice boomed, vibrating in Naku’s teeth. “If you witness the Erasure, it takes root in your mind. Focus on the horizon!”Kaelen lunged forward. To anyone else, Naku would have looked like a girl running alone through a collapsing nightmare. But to Naku, a towering titan of Starlight was clearing a path. When a falling timber from the tavern threatened to crush her, Kaelen caught it. There was no sound of wood hitting metal—only a hiss of steam as the "nothingness" of the timber met the "somethingness" of the knight."I can't leave them!" Naku sobbed, her lungs burning.“You save them by surviving!” Kaelen countered. He reached down, and for a fleeting second, Naku felt a surge of unnatural strength pull her forward. They reached the village gate just as the ground beneath it turned into a bottomless white void. Naku leapt. For a heart-stopping moment, she hung in the air. Then, a heavy, armoured hand seemed to scoop her through the air, depositing her onto the dead, crunchy grass of the Wilderlands.Behind her, Oakhaven was gone. There was only a wall of silent, milky misChapter 2: The Edge of the MapThe scream that tore through the village wasn't human. It was the sound of reality itself splintering.
