THE WOLF'S DESTINY
Updated at Feb 19, 2023, 12:31
Lelandi Wildhaven is terrified when she sees her cousin Ural slink into the woods in his wolf form. She decides to enter the Silver Town Tavern, which is remote, surrounded by forest, a haven from the harsh reality of the forced marriage, and secure from Bruin’s retribution. She is surprised to find five bearded men at the table, who have seen her disguise and are admiring her. She suspects that the worn-out antique mirrors on the rear wall behind the bar have been silent witnesses to the events there for a long time. Lelandi arrives at a pub frequented by gray lupus garous and is greeted warmly by the bartender. Despite her differences in appearance, she still feels like Lelandi, Larissa’s triplet. She is given a large green glass and a chilled bottle of water by the bartender and pays for the water. She chooses a table that is partially concealed by shadows in the farthest corner, hoping to come across as unremarkable, unworthy of anyone’s inspection, and human. Darien Silver should arrive shortly. Lelandi is confronted with the idea that Larissa had the gall to mate with a gray, especially considering that she already had a mate. She believes it was her own fault and is determined to track down her brother and uncle and curse them for abandoning the family after learning what had happened to Larissa and burying the killer. Two lupus garous twins, Jake and Tom, walk into the bar and Lelandi is immediately aware of their presence. She stiffens her back and grips her glass tighter, feeling self-conscious and alarm bells ringing. Tom takes a deep breath as if he were love-struck and the bearded one furrows his dark brows. Sam explains that it’s a private club and first come, first served. Lelandi decides to sit at the table across from Darien’s, but the tables situated on the other side of the bar are too near the front door or in the middle of the floor. She isn’t leaving until she has a chance to observe the leader and as many of the others as she can. Lelandi enters the wolves’ lair and finds Jake and Tom sitting with Darien at the table where she normally sits. Three men barged into the tavern, laughing and boisterous, and Lelandi recognizes one of them as the leader of the gray lupus garou in the area. She decides to sit next to the rest-rooms to lessen the chance of creating fireworks, but the door bangs open again and she recognizes the leader as Darien Silver. Lelandi is the first to break eye contact with Darien, a bigger wolf than she is and used to working with. He is puzzled by her appearance and wears a hat and glasses that look like the real thing. Larissa was drawn to the attention-grabbing gray, and Lelandi can’t help but ponder the experience of having a romp with a boisterous wolf like him. She wants revenge on Larissa’s killer, but before leaving Silver Town, she has to get revenge on Darien. Macho gang leaders had to assert their authority and ensure that no one, especially women, could overshadow them in their region. When a woman wearing mid-thigh leather boots and short shorts with a turtleneck top entered the tavern, one of the four men seated at the bar whistled and shouted, “Hey, Silva.” She flashed him a dazzling red-lipped grin before casting a quick glance Lelandi’s way. Darien was able to get a better view of her and the entryway when he persuaded Tom to relocate to the chair with his back to the door. Silva’s focus changed, and she noticed Darien close by. She reassured herself that she didn’t fear him, but any Lupus Garou worth his pelt would be cautious when approaching a pack leader. The narrator, Lelandi, is working in a pub with Sam and Silva. Silva is a red lupus garou female at five four and is looking for a name for a visitor from out of town. Lelandi is used to being with people of her own kind and feels more at ease with brutish people, but these people are neither human nor of her own type and if she gave them the chance, a pack of them could eat her alive. She tries to project a more intimidating appearance and acts like a squeaking mouse, hoping no one can smell that she is about to be exposed. Silva appears to be interested in Lelandi, a red lupus garou posing as a person, and asks her where she is staying. Darien remains silent, and everyone is enthralled by Silva’s explanation. Sam makes Lelandi’s margarita, but no one says a word at Darien’s table. The situation repeats until the establishment is busy. Lelandi is a clone of a dead sister who appears at the grays’ hangout to exact retribution. She is greeted warmly by several males, but is being frowned at by three women who look like they want her dead. When she enters the women’s restroom, she hears the door to the outside squeak open and realizes that someone has killed Larissa. Lelandi came up with a scheme to discover her Larissa’s killer, but had no idea that anyone would think she would be interested in hunting the pack leader. She was approached by three women in their mid-twenties,
