In a devastated future, humanity teeters on the brink of extinction following a catastrophic global war triggered by political assassinations and escalating tensions between superpowers. Nuclear exchanges and environmental collapse have rendered the surface world uninhabitable, forcing the few survivors—scattered remnants of diverse populations—into fortified underground bunkers. Life in these bunkers is regimented and utilitarian: resources are scarce, and every individual is conditioned from birth to contribute to survival through scientific and technological expertise. There are no luxuries like childhood play or personal freedoms; education begins at age three, focusing on engineering, biology, and physics to maintain life-support systems and search for ways to reclaim the surface. Society is meritocratic but joyless, with emotions suppressed in favor of logic and duty. The war's origins trace back to the past, specifically the assassination of a newly elected Russian president, Alexei Kuznetsov, whose moderate policies and diplomatic acumen could have de-escalated international conflicts. His death sparked a chain reaction of instability, leading to the apocalypse. In the future, bunker scientists discover rudimentary time-travel technology, allowing one-way missions to the past to alter key events. The protagonist, a brilliant young scientist, is selected for this desperate gambit.
