Chapter 1
Leah
The slow music coming from the speakers did not drown the words said by Ryan, my boss's bestfriend. Although, I would have wished it did.
"Evan, you should have put Leah in her place from the very beginning. What will Racheal say?" His friend, Colton asked, making my heat thump faster.
"Put her in what place?" Evan asked his tone flat.
For three years, I had been in love with my boss, Evan Brighton. He was everything a woman could ever dream of. Our first meeting had been at a mall, and he had come to my defense when I was being harrassed due to a declined card. Evan had payed, and offered me his business card, thinking I needed a job. Of course I had swooped in and had gotten the job barely a week later. One week had turned into three years of longing for a man that was so close, but so out of reach.
"Don't pretend like you don't know the girl has been in love with you since she met you. Everyone knows it." Ryan answered, making my heart drop to my stomach.
"And so? I know she has been in love with me, Ryan. It's why I have her around me. She is so f*****g obedient and jumps at my beck and call. Only a woman in love with me can do that." Evan's tone was tinged with laughter, making my cheeks burn as I continued to listen, unable to walk away.
"You mean like the time you had her run on heels under the heavy rain, to get you your favorite coffee which is a few blocks away? I can't believe you let that happen."
A familiar chuckle rolled out, making my heart sink further. "That's the least of it, Ryan. I'm sure if I ask her to jump into the damn lagoon for me, she would."
"That's sick."
I leaned in closer, pretending to refill my glass. I saw Evan shrug, his expression cold.
"You can call it that, but I call it using a person to their full potential, Ryan." he winked. "What I don't understand is what this has to do with Racheal."
"The fact that she is back, and would not want to see a woman hovering over you, Evan. I know you enjoy the benefits that come with having Leah fawn over you, but this is trouble man."
This time his chuckle was loud. "There is no trouble man. I don't find Leah attractive. She's just my personal assistant. and I'm sure by the time she delivers a few dozen of flowers to Racheal over the next few days, she would understand she has no place in my life." he leaned forward, a devilish smirk on his lips. "And I intend to make her deliver all of them to Racheal in person."
At his cold words, my ears rang.
Racheal had left Evan about a few months before I had met him, and their breakup had been so devastating for him.
In fact, I had nursed him back to life, being at his beck and call like he had said. Shame and hurt brought tears to the back of my eyes.
I blinked, forcing them to go away, but it was futil as my vision blurred, yet I could not move an inch.
"That's cold."
"Cold? You don't know Leah then. I could run her over with my truck and she would keep crawling back. It's entertaining to see, how weak-minded. Oh I would love every f*****g second of this."
Ryan frowned, not amused. "I don't know about this, man...."
Evan rolled his eyes. "Loosen up a little. I'm sure she won't mind. Racheal is the love of my life, and the only woman I would ever want. People like Leah Thompson are to be used."
I couldn't hear any more.
I took one step back, then another, and another, until I got to the exit, then on shaky knees, I whirled around, and ran.
My legs couldn't carry me fast enough, as I rushed back to the bathroom and walked into the first stall saw, where I shut the door and let the tears fall freely.
For the past three years I had made myself into what I though Evan liked.
I had given up my love for motorcylcles and the ring, to become the prim and proper assistant, all to be close to him. All for him to see me.
All these time, I though I had hidden it so well, but he had known. He had known and had used me.
I felt my knees buckle under me, and a sob tore through my throat.
What had I done to myself?
There was no way I could stay or look him in the face. Not after what I had heard.
My phone chimed in my purse and I quickly wiped away my tears and rushed to anwer when I saw it was Evan. At the last second, my fingers hovered and I cringed when I realized just how eager I had been to answer his call, despite how hurt I was.
This was what he ahd meant when he had mocked me for being a his beck and call.
Nausea made it's way up my throat, and I contemplated not picking up, but the line rang again, and knowing Evan, he was going to keep calling, or send people searching for me.
Funny how I had interpreted it as him feeling the same way I felt.
What a fool I had been.
"Sir?" my voice was steadier than I had expected, surprising me.
"Where are you? I need my speech for tonight!" His words were smooth, with the same tone I had become used to. But this time, I could hear the silent mockery.
He wanted to show off in front of Ryan.
I set the phone back in my purse, and took a deep breath, willing my nerves to calm down.
I hated him. I hated him so much for being mean and classless. The complete opposite of what I had thought him to be. How could I have loved someone like him?
There was no way I was going to give him that satcisfaction.
I was going to keep my head up high like I had heard nothing.
Resentment and determination clasped around my heart like a vice and I adjusted my makeup, wiping every trace of tears and went to give Evan his speech.
But as I walked back into the party, nothing would have prepared me for the sight that awaited me.
There, right in the middle of the dancefloor, stood Evan,.
But hanging on his arm, with his tongue down her throat, was Racheal, the woman he had always loved. The woman he was always going to love.
My fingers tightened around the saucers in my hands, and the rest of my body trembled.
So much for being strong.
I couldn't take my eyes off them. I watched in horror as she moaned and Evan growled, deepening the kiss as if she wasn't close enough. As if they didn't have a sea of eager eyes watching them.
My breath caught in my throat, and on shaky legs, I turned around to leave, but a tiny fragile voice stopped me.
"I... I thought you were never going to take me back. I thought you won't forgive me for being stupid three years ago..." Racheal whipered, and I turned my head to see her eyes glistening with tears as Evan pulled her close.
"I will always choose you, Racheal. Always and forever."
I didn't stop this time, turning my head and walking out of the hall without looking back.
The next morning, I walked into Evan's office to see him completely livid.
"Where the hell were you? I had to change my entire speech!" his eyes were blazing, but I didn't care.
I was done playing the little obedient secretary to a man as horrible as him.
"I'm sorry Sir. I entrusted the drive containing your speech into capable hands." I said calmly, and placed the envelope I had in my hand, on his desk.
I knew Greta, Evan's other assistant, had made sure to deliver his speech to him. This, his reaction, was just a powerplay.
Evan's eyes narrowed as he eyes the envelope. "What is that?"
"My resignation. As of today, I am no longer an employee here. I know the punishment that comes with resigninign without notice, and I have payed to the financial team."
Evan looked taken aback, a sudden darkness seeping into his eyes. It was gone in an instant. "Are you sure about this?"
I nodded and took a step back, my shoulders tight.
"Leave then. You can see yourself out of my office." he said calmly, his eyes going back to his laptop like I didn't exist.
Well he didn't exist to me anymore.
