PROLOGUE
Tasha's POV “Welcome home Sir,” a tall man who seemed to be a butler said, slightly bowing to regard the man beside me. I raised my eyebrow at the gesture. Mathew flashed him a smile and nodded whilst making his way inside the house in fast strides, my hand secured in his. The man fell into step with us and tried to match our pace. “I trust you had a safe trip. Everyone, especially your Grandmother have been expecting you," He continued, shifting his focus from Mathew to me. Mathew stopped, causing me to follow suit. “Thank you Bailey. It feels good to be back" He said with a small smile, earning a nod from Bailey. “Where's my Mother?” “In the study. As well as the rest of the family" Bailey rushed out. “Alright." He started pulling me towards another direction immediately and I tried to match his stride. “Slow down. I can't walk that fast" Whatever this was about, it had him really agitated for some reason. I had asked him about it several times but he was not in the mood for conversations and dismissed me. He opened a door that had soft piano music coming from inside the room and we stepped inside. The music ceased immediately with four pairs of eyes trained on us. Okayyy, that was a bit awkward. “Mathew!” A woman sporting a huge smile got up from her position and engulfed him in a hug, causing him to release my hand to return the hug. There's an elderly lady whom I assume is his grandmother sitting on the sofa the woman got up from, a man who looked a little like Mathew was standing behind a lady sitting by the piano with a frown on her face. The woman released Mathew and held his face in her hands, looking into his eyes. “How have you been? Look at you!” She exclaimed and maintained her smile. “I have been well, Mother. How have you been?” He asked her, smiling. I caught his grandmother's gaze. She looked me over distastefully and shook her head in disappointment. I furrowed my brows at her actions. “Grandmother" Mathew approached her and bent down on one knee to regard her. “How have you been?” “I've been alright. I need grandchildren though and that one doesn't seem to understand that" She gestured towards the lady by the piano who immediately bowed her head. “I was thrilled when Susan informed me of your news. But I never expected it to be a child of her age and kind" she turned her attention back to Mathew. I furrowed my brows. What did she mean by that? I'm well aware I was young for Mathew but ‘kind’? “Grandmother," “What? We don't even take her kind as servants!” She raised her voice. I looked at her stunned and speechless. “What were you thinking getting into bed with her? You could get arrested! Moreover that child is an abomination" She yelled. “Excuse me?” I voiced out, unable to keep my irritation down and gaining everyone's attention. “You don't talk back at elders and you certainly don't speak until spoken to, child. Weren't you taught that?” His mother said, drawing my attention to her. “She just racially profiled me. Didn't you get that?” I ask annoyed. “Tasha!” Mathew said in a reprimanding tone, causing me to stare at him, stunned into silence. “She's disrespectful. Just like her kind… I couldn't be more disappointed" His Grandmother said while shaking her head. The confusion and slight irritation on my face was visible. First of all, if they were going to talk about respect, they might as well start with her. “It all just happened Grandmother. It wasn't intentional" Mathew's words irked me. “Listen. I already said this to your son even though he insisted on dragging me here for whatever reason I am still yet to understand. You don't have to worry about your bloodline being tainted by me or my baby. I’ll get rid of it" I said. “You would do no such thing!!” Both his mother and grandmother boomed, causing me to flinch instinctively. “Although the circumstances surrounding the situation are not pleasing in the least. You must keep the child!" His grandmother sternly said and my anger detonated. All I had been told since my pregnancy came to light was I couldn't get rid of it but no one has been kind enough to give me a valid reason as to why. “Why? It's my body. I get to decide what happens to it. Moreover, none of you seem pleased about this situation and I'm the one who's going to be bloated and all big in a couple of months not any of you. So I don't see why I have to do your bidding. Make it make sense!” I had reached the zenith of my frustration. The room went quiet with everyone's gaze trained on me. “Listen here brat. We are not obligated to answer to you. What ever I say is law. If I ask you to stand on one foot with an arm raised above your head, you would do it without questions" Grandmother said, her gaze literally drilling a hole through my skull. She coughed and Mathew passed her the glass of water that was on the table beside the sofa. “Your child would secure the throne for the family. You cannot carry out your actions" It took a while for me to process the her words before I glanced at Mathew who already had his eyes on me. “You're a prince?” I voiced out, barely above a whisper. “Is that all you got from what was said?” His mother asked with a scowl on her face. I ignored her and turned to address his grandmother since he had suddenly become mute. “You expect me to carry the pregnancy and hand you my baby after?” she looked at me incredulously. “No! That would never happen. No illegitimate child would ever be accepted in this family. Moreover how would we explain a coloured child?” She spat out the last sentence while looking at me with some level of disgust and as if I had lost my marbles. Mathew's mother muttered something and turned her attention towards the window while he himself remained strangely quiet, as well as his brother and his wife whom I was convinced had a permanent scowl on her face. “You would both be married within the month," that caught my attention and immediately led my focus back to her. “What?” I asked, assured I didn't hear her right. “The sooner the better. We can't risk a scandal breaking out" She attempts to stand. “Wha..I can't possibly marry him. I barely know him. I won't." She gave me a bored expression. “You do not have a choice child. I out of everyone am the least ecstatic considering your appearance and the fact that the bloodline would be tainted as you rightly said, but it needs to be done" She moved to leave the room. “You'll be wed in two weeks" I glanced at Mathew, shocked and in disbelief but he looked as though he'd always known this would happen.
