Chapter 1
"Dominique do the dishes and Joselynn please help when you girls get home from school. Ok?" My foster mom, Jen, yelled up the stairs at us. "I'm off to work. See you girls later. Love you."
"Ok, we love you too," I said back.
She left, closing the front door behind her.
"Are you ready yet, Josie?" I yelled down the hall. Today was our last day of Senior year and I don't want to be late. Which is odd, I know, because I'm normally the last one out of the house.
"Dang Dom! What's up with you?" Josie asked.
"What?" I said, with a weird look back at her. "Come on, let's go. I don't wanna be late." We headed downstairs and out the front door. We got into my car and I drove to school. On the way, I thought back on how Josie and I got to this place.
Josie and I have been with Jen for 4years now. Almost 5. We're not real sisters either. I got here just before I turned 14 and Josie came a few months later. We didn't always get along. Only until about 2years ago did we finally become friends and feel like sisters. Who knew that when some secrets come out, it can bring people closer. Well, at least in our case it did.
I'll explain.
I grew up never knowing my mom and dad. I only know that my dad was never around and I had a junky mother who overdosed when I was 1. But luckily, my grandmother took care of me until she passed away in an accident. I was fortunate and came here with Jen shortly after it happened.
Josie and I are both 18 now. I’m 5'5", long straight jet black hair, light tan skin, blue eyes that sometimes change to grey or green, and a very curvy body. Josie was different. Almost opposite of me. She’s taller, close to 5'8'', green hazel eyes but sometimes they would be a clear baby blue. She had no curves, pale skin and long blonde wavy hair.
Her backstory was that she was left at a church before coming here. That's all I knew at that time. And that's only because I was eavesdropping. She didn't talk to anyone when she first got here either. That could have been why we didn't get along. I talk a lot. Always have.
Like I was saying before, Josie and I were not friends or very friendly to each other before. Only around Jen did we get along… And that was just for show, for Jen’s sake. She lost her husband not long before we both got here and didn’t have kids of her own. I guess she got us so she wouldn't be lonely. She's been a great foster mom though. We care a lot about her.
Back to the secrets, that changed everything about 2 years ago at a school dance. It was on a Friday night after school. Josie and I got ready and Jen helped us with our hair and makeup. I was wearing a pretty navy blue sleeveless dress that stopped just above the knee. Light makeup since I didn't really like to wear it and Jen put some big curls in my hair. Josie wore a pretty purple dress with short sleeves that went past the knee. Her hair was up that night. She’s a little more conservative than me.
She was going to the dance with an asshole jock named Kevin. I went with a friend, Alejandro, since I didn’t have a boyfriend. We all met at the dance. Josie and I went our separate ways once there.
Later, about an hour before the dance was done, I got bored standing around after my so-called friend left me there and went off to dance with someone else. So, I went looking for Josie. I just wanted to leave and I couldn’t leave if she wasn’t with me. Someone told me that they seen her and Kevin go into one of the locker rooms.
I went in looking for her only to find Kevin hitting and yelling at her. I saw that Josie's dress was torn. I thought it was because of him, but later found out that I was wrong. I went to stop him and he pushed me back into the lockers. I hit my back on the lock on one of the doors. I blinked my eyes and let out a breath. It hurt.
It felt like slow motion. I closed my eyes and raised my hand up and yelled “Stop!” Well, he definitely stopped. When I opened my eyes and looked up, I about died of shock and fright. He was frozen. Like hard as a rock statue, frozen, and in Josie's place was a big gorgeous all white wolf with clear baby blue eyes. That night was when I found out that I was a witch and that Josie was a werewolf. After the shock wore off and Josie had turned back, we came home and talked for hours.
And yes I unfroze Kevin, after about 30 minutes of trying. Although, I feel he should have stayed frozen but Josie didn't want that. Such a goody two shoes. I did however threaten him that if he ever said a word of what happened that I would freeze him again and bury him. I think he transferred schools after that.
That's when we became best friends. She told me what her life was really like before coming to Jen’s house too. It was sad. You might think I had it bad but I still feel that Josie had it worse.
She told me how it was living with her pack. Her dad was the Alpha, the one who leads the pack, and her mom was the Luna of a small pack in the woods. The Luna's job is to make sure everyone is happy, she said. Especially the Alpha. She goes on to tell me that a Rogue pack attacked them one night and that her and her mother barely escaped with their lives.
Her mom first went to one of Josie's uncles for help since it was closest but he wouldn't help. He called Josie a curse because she was all white. So they went to another uncle who helped them. They were there for a short time when the same rogue pack attacked them again. They got away but this time her mom didn't make it. She told me that her mom said something to her before she passed.
"Joselynn, you are a rare and strong werewolf. Stay hidden and never let that Rogue Alpha find you." Is what she had said.
Afterwards, Josie had wandered to the church and they called CPS. That's how she got here with Jen and I.
Back to the present
The school day ended but not before a lot of pranks were pulled. Josie was outside saying 'Goodbye' to some of her friends. I ran up behind her and scared her.
"Dang it Dom!" She said catching her breath. "Come on. Quit playing. We have to get our stuff ready for the trip."
I just laughed. "We still have over a week before we leave," I affirmed, while walking to and unlocking my car. We got into my Ford Mustang, my baby, and headed home.
Josie was so excited. Honestly, I was too. It will be our first road trip together, without Jen and out of the state. We live in Arkansas. We're going to the far east side of Tennessee. We'll be staying in a cabin in the mountains. Miles from anyone else and about 20 minutes to the nearest little town. We planned it this way so that we could both be free to be yourselves. Josie can run free and far in her wolf form and I'll be able to do magic without worrying about anyone seeing us.
Once home, I threw my things on the bench by the front door. Josie started nagging me to remember to pick my stuff up later and to help with the dishes. I rolled my eyes and said "Yes mummy dearest." We both laughed and headed to the kitchen.
I grabbed a couple glasses and poured us some orange juice. We washed the dishes while we talked about the trip some more before Jen got home. She still doesn't know about us. We felt it would be best if she didn’t know.
Josie and I decided that we would cook dinner tonight to celebrate the last day of school. We made spaghetti with meatballs and garlic bread.
After dinner I went to my room and started making a list of things to take with me on the trip. Shirts, pants, socks, shampoo, bug spray, ect.
The whole time thinking 'I'm sure Josie made her list months ago.' I laughed inside my head and rolled my eyes. I knew that she already had a list made. I can say that I'm an organized person but Josie is a little OCD in comparison. I'm surprised she didn't have your stuff already packed and ready from the day we started talking about it. I smiled just thinking about how we've come closer together and what lies ahead for us both. We have our whole lives ahead of us to be free and do what we want to do.
I was feeling exhausted. Yawning. I turned off the light and went to bed.
