Chapter 1: Phoenix Reckoning: A Twin's Curse
In a derelict warehouse on the city's outskirts, a woman with disheveled hair lay weakly upon the ground, her life hanging by the faintest thread.
Upon closer inspection, her body was a canvas of lash marks. Her slender legs were twisted at unnatural angles, lying limp and useless.
The rusted iron door groaned on its hinges. Luo Xi struggled to open her eyes, her fingers tightening around a shard of sharp stone.
She had ground it day and night. Her once-soft palms were now scarred and bloodied, yet she had never ceased her labor.
The hatred in her eyes was a torrential river, engulfing all reason.
The door was pulled open. A woman clad in a beige gown and crystal-heeled shoes approached with elegant grace, her steps echoing towards the motionless figure.
"Dead already?" the woman sneered, prodding Luo Xi with the tip of her shoe. The sharp heel instantly scored bloody trails across the exposed skin.
Two expressionless bodyguards stepped forward, hauling Luo Xi from the ground as if she were a discarded rag.
"Well, well, not dead after all. What is this act? So eager to die?" The visitor was none other than Luo Yuyi, Luo Xi's own sister, born of the same mother.
Gazing upon the pitiful, wretched state of the once-celebrated golden girl, a flash of cruel satisfaction crossed Luo Yuyi's eyes. "Sister," she smiled, "I came today to bring you wonderful news. Why do you look so unwelcoming?"
Luo Xi remained with head bowed, as lifeless as a broken doll, offering no reaction.
In the beginning, she had raged, screamed, and fought with desperate fury, but it had only invited Luo Yuyi's perverse delight and intensified her torturous whippings. The more violent Luo Xi's reactions, the greater her sister's pleasure.
Seeing her sister's utter detachment, a spark of anger ignited in Luo Yuyi. She viciously yanked Luo Xi's hair back, her smile turning**. "Sister, this indifference of yours is truly chilling. Leng Minxing once doted on you as his most precious treasure. Now that he's been sentenced to death, you show not a shred of grief. If he knew, do you think he could rest in peace?"
Luo Xi's pupils contracted violently.
"What did you say?!"
"I said, today, your man was sentenced to death!" Luo Yuyi announced triumphantly.
She was the one who should have married Leng Minxing, but Luo Xi had stolen her intended, usurped the affection rightfully hers! It had forced her into an unsavory alliance with a mere bastard son.
Fortunately, this foolish woman had been gullible, confessing everything, granting Luo Yuyi the opportunity she needed.
With Leng Minxing imprisoned, the sole heir to the Leng family was now Leng Yuan. By marrying him, she would become the young mistress of the household. If only Leng Minxing had held even a fraction of regard for her, she would not have been driven to such extremes.
They had brought this upon themselves!
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible! Minxing never committed those crimes! This is a false charge! How could he be sentenced to death?" Luo Xi's scream was a ragged, torn sound.
Long weeks of weeping, fury, and suppression had shredded her vocal cords, leaving her voice harsh and grating.
"Hah! You remain as naively foolish as ever. Since we had the means to orchestrate his imprisonment, we certainly possess the means to ensure his demise. See how considerate I am? I disposed of your son first, fearing his loneliness in the afterlife, so I'm sending your husband to keep him company. Don't worry, your turn will come soon. After all, we are sisters by blood. I will naturally reunite your entire family."
As she spoke, she could no longer contain her triumphant, derisive laughter.
"Luo Yuyi, may you die a wretched death!" Luo Xi’s grip on the sharp stone tightened unconsciously, her bleeding palm forgotten. Her eyes burned crimson as she let out a piercing, grief-stricken shriek. Summoning a sudden, desperate strength, she broke free from the bodyguards' hold and lunged at Luo Yuyi.
The pointed stone in her hand was aimed directly at her sister's face.
Yet before she could make contact, a powerful force hurled her aside. She fell headlong, crashing into a pile of discarded rubble and rusty steel rebar.
Crimson blood gushed from a wound on her forehead, staining the furious hatred in her dying gaze. Even in her final moment, her eyes remained fixed unblinkingly on Luo Yuyi's direction.
Death had found her, but her eyes refused to close.
**Nightfall.** The sterile scent of disinfectant filled the air. Luo Xi sat bolt upright in a hospital bed, drenched in cold sweat.
She stared, bewildered, at the unfamiliar surroundings. The visceral pain of her death throbbed vividly in her memory. How had she awoken in a hospital?
Her hand flew to her forehead—smooth, unblemished skin met her touch.
Luo Xi froze. What was happening?
Lost in confusion, she failed to notice that her hands, once scarred and broken, were now perfectly intact. It was only when two familiar voices echoed from outside the room that understanding jolted through her.
"This child, why couldn't she just yield to Yiyi? Yiyi hasn't eaten or drunk for days because of this. If anything happens to her, what will we do? They're both such a worry!" A woman's** voice carried through the door, accompanied by a man's weary sigh.
Then, the door opened.
Seeing her eldest daughter sitting rigidly on the bed, the woman who entered felt a pang of alarm. The girl's dazed expression suggested she might have overheard the conversation.
"Xiao Xi! You're awake!" a man in his forties exclaimed.
The newcomers were none other than Luo Xi's father, Luo Yang, and her mother, Mu Qing.
Luo Xi stared, thunderstruck, as the memory of this familiar scene flooded her mind.
She remembered.
This was during her freshman year of university. She had just turned eighteen.
It was also the second year after her sister, Luo Yuyi, had entered their household!
She and Luo Yuyi were twin sisters. At birth, Luo Yuyi had been stolen from the hospital by an attendant on duty and sold to a poor family, enduring a childhood of hardship.
Though born of the same womb, they bore little resemblance. It was only through childhood keepsakes provided by their mother and a subsequent paternity test that her identity as the Luo family's true daughter—Luo Xi's own blood sister—was confirmed.
Originally named Mo Yiyi, she adopted the name Luo Yuyi upon joining the family.
Luo Xi had been exceedingly caring and affectionate towards this sister who had suffered so much. She willingly gave her whatever she desired and shouldered the blame for her mistakes, believing this was her duty as an elder sister. Little did she know that from this very moment, her beloved sister had already begun maneuvering her, step by deliberate step, towards a precipice.
Somewhere along the way, her parents' doting affection shifted entirely to her sister. Whenever Luo Xi suffered an injustice, their response became a refrain: "She is your younger sister. You should yield to her." Thus, she was forced to bear the blame for transgressions not her own.
Luo Yuyi delighted in appropriating her possessions—whether clothes, jewelry, or anything she fancied, they would inevitably end up in her hands.
