Chapter 1
"Luke, sign this divorce agreement and take the money. Get lost."
Luke Moore had just prepared a candlelit dinner. He was coming out of the kitchen when he saw his wife's best friend show up uninvited.
Olivia Robinson, dressed in a black Chanel business suit, glanced at Luke's casual attire disdainfully and handed him a divorce agreement.
Luke was stunned. "Divorce agreement? What do you mean?"
Olivia crossed her arms, a mocking smile on her face. "Don't act like you don't understand. Your marriage with Grace is over! She's a successful CEO, a famous entrepreneur in Oceanwood now. And you? You're just a useless househusband!"
She added, "Grace is way out of your league! You only embarrass her and tarnish her reputation."
Luke found it absurd and retorted, "You think I'm not good enough for her?"
He did cook for Grace at home, but in reality, his family was one of the most mysterious and powerful families in the world, with immense influence. Money and status were the last things they needed to worry about.
Luke had a relaxed air about him, a calmness most people didn't possess. He wanted to stay behind his wife, to support her in all her endeavors. Yet, his low profile brought him nothing but humiliation and insult. His dignity was trampled on.
Olivia sneered, "Take a good look in the mirror, Luke. What makes you think you're worthy of Grace? She turned the struggling Taylor Group into Oceanwood's leading company within just four years, and her stock's through the roof! Next, she'll collaborate with Grandview Group, the strongest company in the city. The sky's the limit for her!"
She continued, "But you? You're just a total loser! Good-for-nothing! How dare you stay with her and keep dragging her down?"
Luke's frown deepened. It was hard for him to believe this was Grace's doing.
"Is this your idea or Grace's?" he asked. "Don't pretend you know anything about our relationship. Grace and I love each other. Our marriage has nothing to do with her money or status!"
Luke believed that Grace understood him and that she would never do something so ungrateful.
When he met Grace, the Taylor family business was circling the drain. They were about to lose everything, and Grace was so desperate that she was ready to end it all. It was Luke who saved her, encouraged her, supported her, and helped the Taylor family through its difficulties, leading to its later success.
Hearing this, Olivia scoffed, "If it weren't Grace's idea, I wouldn't be standing here. Luke, I know you're unwilling to divorce Grace, but the gap between you two is growing. So what if you once helped her? Over the past four years, you've been living off her, and she has repaid the debt of gratitude. Now, it's you who owes her!"
"Think about it. You've been Grace's burden for years. If you accept the divorce now, you can get 20 million dollars. Grace pities you and doesn't want you to end up begging for a living!" said Olivia in disgust.
Luke took a deep breath.
Their four-year marriage was ending just like that. He hadn't expected Grace to be so eager to distance herself from him, as if their love was a debt she could pay off and walk away from.
Even worse, today was their wedding anniversary; he had prepared a candlelight dinner just for her.
Luke gave a bitter smile. He pulled out a chair, sat down, and stared at the spread before him. "Fine," he said, his voice flat. "But Grace needs to tell me herself."
Olivia laughed, "Please, do you think she needs to show up for this? She's offering you 20 million dollars as alimony and hasn't had security throw you out. Consider it mercy!"
Luke's lips curled in self-mockery. "Mercy? She thinks she can just buy her way out of our marriage? And she won't even show her face. Look how arrogant she is!"
With that, he declared, "If she doesn't show up, I won't sign it!"
Olivia was furious. She slammed the table. "Luke, how dare you..."
At that moment, a woman in a white dress entered, her slender figure graceful. She had bright eyes and rosy lips; her satin dress revealed her shoulders slightly, and her long brown hair draped over her waist smoothly, adding a touch of allure.
She walked up to Luke and said coldly, "Luke, your childish behavior only makes me hate you more! You called me arrogant? It's all because you're a loser!"
He stared at Grace, a loved stranger, bitterness rising. They had gone through thick and thin; he had supported her career at the cost of hiding his true strength.
For four years, Luke had stepped aside and asked for nothing, avoiding overshadowing her brilliance. In the end, all he got was her calling him a "loser."
Luke felt heartbroken. "Is that what you think of me?"
Grace sensed the sincerity in Luke's eyes and felt a bit sad. She couldn't bear to meet his gaze, so she thrust the divorce agreement at him instead. "Let's just face it: you're not capable. I'm willing to give you 20 million dollars, and we'll part ways."
She added, "We're just too far apart. Even if we tried to make it work, it would be meaningless."
The hopeful look in Luke's eyes disappeared when he heard Grace's words.
Luke shook his head with a wry smile. "Grace, you really think my love can be bought and sold, don't you? You're willing to trade our marriage for wealth and status, just like that."
Grace clenched her fists, seemingly forcing herself to stay firm.
She sat across from Luke, speaking with certainty, "Luke, I want to be stronger, and the truth is, you can't keep up with me anymore. You don't understand my choice because we're from different worlds."
She went on, "Maybe you've been a good husband, always trying to take care of my needs, but I can buy comfort and security with money. You can never give me what I truly want!"
Luke looked at Grace, separated by just a table, feeling as if they were worlds apart.
Luke stood up and looked down at Grace, his lips curling into a cool smile. "Grace, how do you know I can't give what you want? You think your power and influence are the only reasons for the Taylor Group's success? Everything the Taylor Group has today is because of me!"
Grace was stunned. "What... What do you mean?"
