Penelope Wakefield is a young lady who finds herself at the receiving end of a heinous act by her own family who plots to have her disowned so they can lay their hands on the family’s wealth. Overwhelmed and devastated, she meets her knight in a very unlikely armor, Lucian Drake, a man who is bereft of any moral compass, passionately obsessive and a self-made billionaire. In her further involvement with the plot of revenge and passion, Penelope gets constantly entangled in Lucian’s world and confined in either protector or captor, either lover or hater.

Surrounded by lies and battling for more power, Penelope has to decide whether to implement her revenge or surrender to the temptation of being in Lucian’s arms. Will she finally give into that darkness of her past or will she be able to have the courage to leave or carve her own future?

Chapter 1: A Nightmare Unveiled Penelope's Pov "Oh my goodness I'm a mess!" I complained, touching my messed up hair and smudged make-up. The last thing I could remember from last night was having a little drink and then...I didn't know about much of what happened afterward. But if nothing truly happened to me yesterday, why then did I feel so sore? I could barely walk, and I even had a bit of a migraine. Then it came flashing back...my sister called me out to have dinner with her and then... she handed me a drink... I was pushed into this bed and then, a man was on top of me. Oh no, oh no, oh no. This couldn't be happening, it had to be a joke. I hurried towards the bed and removed the blanket, to see a blood stain that couldn't be described by any other thing than a lady losing her virginity. I gritted my teeth angrily. That was supposed to be for my husband. Not an ordinary man looking for a w***e to f**k!! I gripped my hair, still unable to believe what happened to me. And why would my own family go to this extent, to bring me down? I felt so betrayed and hurt... Because this wasn't a plan they had discussed in one day. They had it in mind to throw me in the mud, and I was dumb to have believed their lies. A soft knock at the door cut through the heavy silence hanging over my dimly lit bedroom. "Pen? Hey, it's me girl. Can I come in?" Gwen's familiar voice was music to my frayed nerves. I borrowed under the blanket. "The door is open." I called out, my voice sounding fragile. The door creaked open, and my oldest friend slipped inside. Her hazel eyes went wide as she took a look at me. "Oh honey..." A pained noise escaped her as Gwen rushed over to engulf me in a warm, reassuring hug that I desperately needed. I clung to her slender frame like it was keeping me anchored, fighting back the hot sting of tears as the memories threatened to drown me all over again. "I can't f*****g believe they did this to me, G," I choked out, burying my face against the comforting curve of her shoulder. "My own goddamn family..." Gwen's slim fingers stroked through my tangled hair in that achingly familiar sisterly gesture. But there was a ragged edge of fury in her tone as she murmured, "I know, sweetie. What they did is absolutely unforgivable. But you're safe now, okay? I'm right here with you." Reluctantly, I pulled back just enough to meet her eyes, my throat constricted with a storm of barely contained emotion. "Why would they do something as irreversible as this to me Gwen? They know how much, just how much I cherished giving myself to only the man I love and will end up with. And they ruined that for me. How could they treat me like such a cheap commodity?! How?!" Gwen's jaw clenched, eyes blazing with barely restrained rage. "Because they're greedy, selfish bastards, Pen. All they care about is money and status and maintaining their twisted f*****g stranglehold over everyone around them. But you don't need those poisonous assholes anymore, babe. You're so much stronger than they'll ever realize." "They just f*****g sold me off to some rando like a piece of meat." With a muffled sound of anguish, Gwen's arms tightened around me in a protective cocoon, her own eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Christ, I'm so f*****g sorry, Pen. No one should ever have to go through some traumatizing s**t like that." Her voice dropped to a fierce growl. I nodded shakily, struggling to draw in a steadying breath as I clung to the solidity of her presence. "I just...I can't f*****g believe this is really happening, you know? Everything I've worked for, bled for to build my own life outside that toxic hellhole of a family? It's all gone, just like that. Because those greedy f***s only see me as an asset to be exploited, not a person." Gwen's expression hardened into grave lines, but that familiar glint of steely determination burned in her eyes. "Not necessarily, babe. We can still fight this, take those bastards down and get your life back from their slimy clutches." I stared at her, feeling a glimmer of hope flicker into life despite the ashes currently smoldering within me. "How? They've already won, G. They have everything – my money, my property, my reputation in tatters..." Rather than respond with empty placations, Gwen's full lips curved into that sly, conspiratorial smile I knew all too well. The one that meant she was concocting some daring scheme, consequences be damned. "Not quite everything, Penelope dear. See, there's one little detail those arrogant f***s overlooked in their dumbass greed." My brows furrowed as confusion warred with cautious curiosity. "What are you talking about?" "The guy you woke up with last night," she clarified, eyes glinting with an almost feral light. "That random dude they whored you out to in their sick game? Well, let's just say he might not be so random after all." A sick feeling curdled in my gut as I slowly shook my head. "No...no, Gwen, I don't want to know. Whoever that asshole was, he's just as guilty as they are for what happened to me." But Gwen simply chuckled, low and conspiratorial, as she reached out to give my hand a firm, grounding squeeze. "Oh, Penny...you've got it all wrong, babe. That dude wasn't some nameless rando at all. In fact, the guy you were essentially sold to like some high-class hooker?" Her grin stretched wider, sharp and predatory. "That was Lucian Drake himself. As in, the legendary billionaire tech mogul and one of the most powerful, dangerous men in this entire goddamn city." My jaw dropped as her words slowly sank in, rebounding through my mind in dizzying fractals. "Wait...what? You're shitting me, right? There's no way..." But Gwen was already shaking her head, that wolfish smile still firmly in place. "I s**t you not, babe. Your depraved excuses for a family pulling some seriously stupid moves last night. In their infinite greed and complete lack of functioning brain cells, they straight up sold you – the sole heir to the Wakefield billions – to one of the richest, most cut-throat motherfuckers in the world." I could only gape at her, struggling to process the enormity of what she was implying as my heart thundered a staccato rhythm against my ribcage. "But...but why? Why would a man like Lucian Drake even entertain something so twisted and depraved?" Gwen shrugged, but her expression had taken on a pensive, calculating edge. "f****d if I know for sure. Maybe he gets his sick kicks that way behind closed doors. Or maybe..." She paused, worrying her full lower lip as she studied me intently. "Or just maybe, this is our chance to turn the tables on those snakes once and for all." Realization began to dawn, bright and incandescent despite the darkness still clinging to my shredded spirit. "You're saying..." I began slowly, feeling the first stirrings of that familiar thrill that always preceded our most daring exploits. "We could use this insane situation to our advantage? To take back what's mine and bring the whole festering Wakefield empire down around their ears?" "Exactly," Gwen affirmed with a fierce nod and that reckless glint dancing in her whiskey-warm eyes. "This is it, babe – our chance to go nuclear on those twisted f***s and blow their whole racket to hell for good. The ultimate vengeance we could never have pulled off otherwise." Her gaze roamed my features with an assessing, slightly mischievous glint. "Though it'll take some strategizing for sure...and maybe just a bit of acting on your part to truly sell this insane scheme." I inhaled a deep, shuddering breath, feeling the hazy tendrils of purpose and resolve solidifying within me at last. Gwen was right – my family, those sadistic poisonous vipers, had made a grave miscalculation in underestimating me. In assuming I would simply wither away, cowed by their unspeakable betrayal, rather than rise like a Phoenix from the ashes of my rage. "Whatever it takes."
