Chapter 1 – The Forbidden Mountain
Li Shen had always known his village was ordinary, almost painfully so. Nestled at the edge of the Jade River Valley, the small settlement was nothing more than a cluster of wooden houses, surrounded by misty hills and dense forests. Life was simple, predictable, and, to most villagers, sufficient. But Li Shen never felt satisfied with “ordinary.” Ever since he was a child, he had sensed a strange emptiness within him—a restless pulse in his chest that no food, no laughter, no routine could fill. That restless feeling had led him, more than once, to wander toward the mountains that loomed to the north. The villagers called them the Forbidden Mountains, a name whispered with fear and superstition. “No one who enters ever returns the same,” they would say. Some claimed the peaks were cursed, others that spirits of the old world lingered there. Li Shen didn’t know what he believed—he just knew that something there called to him, and he could not resist. On a morning where the fog hung thick and low, he set out once again. His small pack contained only the essentials: a water gourd, some dried meat, and a short wooden staff he had carved himself. He had warned no one; his father had passed years ago, and his mother, frail and weak, had no strength to stop him. So he left quietly, stepping past the familiar thatch-roofed houses and into the looming shadow of the mountains. The path was steep and jagged, winding through ancient trees whose roots twisted over stone as if guarding secrets buried for centuries. The air grew cooler with each step, carrying the scent of moss and wildflowers. Birds sang here, but their melodies were strange, almost dissonant, as though warning him to turn back. After hours of climbing, Li Shen came upon a narrow crevice between two massive cliffs. Something about it felt…different. The wind that slipped through the c***k carried a soft hum, a vibration that made the hair on his arms stand on end. He hesitated only briefly before curiosity overpowered caution. He squeezed through, brushing against cold stone, and emerged into a small hidden valley. At the center of this valley stood an enormous boulder, carved with faint, unreadable symbols. A soft golden light pulsed from cracks in its surface, illuminating the surrounding trees with an otherworldly glow. Li Shen stepped closer, heart hammering in his chest. He had stumbled upon something forbidden, something ancient. The moment his fingers brushed the glowing stone, a surge of energy shot through his body. Pain and exhilaration collided as his vision blurred, then sharpened. Every nerve, every cell seemed to awaken simultaneously. Images flashed in his mind—mountains, rivers, strange creatures, and symbols that made no sense yet felt familiar. His pulse raced uncontrollably. He stumbled backward, gasping for breath. Then a voice, soft and melodic, echoed in his mind. “You have been chosen. Your path begins now.” Li Shen dropped to his knees, trembling. He had never believed in spirits or relics, yet the sensation was undeniable. Warmth spread from his chest outward, and when he opened his eyes, the golden glow seemed to have fused with him, a quiet hum lingering in the air. As he struggled to comprehend what had happened, the valley grew still. The birds ceased their songs, the wind stilled, and an eerie silence settled. Li Shen’s hands shook as he lifted them, expecting something miraculous—fire, light, power—but found only…himself. Yet he felt different. Stronger. Lighter. As if a tiny flame had ignited in the center of his being. Footsteps. Li Shen froze. From the shadows of the trees, a figure emerged—a man draped in robes that shimmered like the night sky, embroidered with silver patterns resembling flowing rivers. His eyes were sharp, piercing yet calm, and his presence radiated authority. “You should not be here,” the man said, his voice low but carrying an unshakable weight. “Few survive the First Awakening.” “I…I didn’t mean to…” Li Shen stammered, taking a step back. “I was just…curious.” The man’s gaze softened slightly, though it remained intense. “Curiosity can be a dangerous thing in these mountains. Yet, it seems the relic has chosen you. That is…rare.” Li Shen blinked. “Chosen me? What do you mean?” “You have Qi within you,” the man said simply, as though that explained everything. “Energy that flows in harmony with the old world. Most children are born without it, but you—” he gestured at Li Shen’s chest, “—carry the spark. If nurtured, you could become powerful beyond imagination. But beware: power comes with peril. There are those who will hunt it, covet it, and destroy anyone in their way.” Li Shen’s mind spun. Qi? Power? Hunt me? He felt a mix of fear and excitement. Everything in his life, all his restlessness, seemed to make sense now. “I…what must I do?” he asked. The man studied him for a long moment. “First, you must survive this mountain. The spirit relic awakened you, but awakening is only the beginning. Many who are chosen perish because they are not prepared. You will need training, guidance, and courage—more than you can imagine.” “Then…please, teach me!” Li Shen said, his voice shaking but resolute. He had no idea what awaited him, but he knew he could not turn back. Not now. A faint smile touched the man’s lips. “Very well. But first…” His hand lifted, pointing toward the dense forest behind them. “A trial awaits. You must face it alone. Only then will your journey truly begin.” Before Li Shen could respond, the trees ahead shivered. Shadows moved unnaturally, twisting and contorting as if alive. Low growls echoed through the valley, and several figures emerged—humanoid, yet grotesque, their eyes glowing red in the dim golden light. Li Shen’s heart leapt. His staff felt heavier than ever, yet he gripped it tightly. The golden warmth inside him pulsed in rhythm with his heartbeat. He didn’t know what he could do, didn’t know how to fight—but he knew one thing: he could not let fear paralyze him. The first shadow lunged. Li Shen swung his staff instinctively. A burst of energy, golden and fierce, radiated from his chest, sending the creature sprawling backward. His eyes widened in shock—he had done it. Somehow, instinctively, the energy had responded to his fear, his determination. The man watched silently, as though expecting this, nodding slightly. “Good. The spark is alive. But this is only the beginning. Survive, and the world will open to you. Fail… and you will join those who were not ready.” Li Shen’s chest heaved. Adrenaline surged through him. For the first time in his life, he felt truly alive. This was not a game, not a simple adventure—this was the beginning of a path that would change everything. The shadows circled again, snarling. Li Shen steadied his breathing, feeling the energy inside him grow warmer, stronger. He remembered the words echoing in his mind: Your path begins now. “Yes,” he whispered, more to himself than anyone else. “I am ready.” And with that, Li Shen charged forward, staff in hand, heart pounding, toward the first real test of his life.
