Beep.
The sound was the first thing to reach me.
It was distant at first, almost swallowed by the darkness surrounding me. I tried to follow it, to understand what it meant, but my mind felt heavy.
Foggy.
I couldn’t remember anything.
I couldn’t even remember my own name.
I tried to move.
Pain exploded through my chest.
A strangled whimper escaped me.
What the hell had happened?
Every breath felt like fire tearing through my lungs. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t even open my eyes.
I was trapped.
Somewhere between consciousness and darkness, I heard voices.
“…stable.”
“She hasn’t woken yet.”
“Give her time.”
The words slipped through my mind and disappeared before I could make sense of them.
Then another sound.
Footsteps.
Someone moved closer.
