CHAPTER ONE
I'll never forget the day my world crumbled. The day I realized, I was more than just a single mother, hiding in a small town for survival.
My name is Vynessa, and I hold a secret that could get me killed.
"As I put my three-year-old triplets to bed, their sparkling eyes shone with an extraordinary intensity. Their laughter lingered in my mind, a bittersweet reminder of the life I'd created for them."
"Mommy, tell us a story," Aria begged, pressing her small fists together.
"About the moon," Eryn added, his eyes shining with so much excitement.
"And the stars," Caelum chimed in, already snuggled under the blanket.
I smiled, settled into the normal space "Once upon a time, in a world beyond our own..."
Their eyes widened as I told a tale of ancient gods, magical creatures, and unknown lands. Little did they know it was our reality.
After the story, I kissed each forehead, inhaling the sweet scent of innocence. My heart was filled with love and fear.
How could I protect them from the truth? From the darkness that hunted us?
As I left their room, the floor creaked beneath my feet. Our small, rented cottage appeared charming, but its isolation was a double-edged sword. Safety and weakness intertwined like the branches of the ancient trees surrounding our home.
In the kitchen, I poured myself a glass of wine, the liquid courage I needed to face the night ahead. The moon outside cast an unsettling glow, reminding me of him, Kaidryn, the charismatic shifter who had rejected me.
Rejection was not the worst part; it was the reason behind it. A reason that might wreck everything.
My phone buzzed loudly in the silence. Unknown number.
"Hello?" I answered cautiously.
"Vynessa, it's time to come out of hiding." A low, gravelly voice sent shivers down my spine.
My heart racing, I asked, "Who is this?” Ice coursed through my veins.
They've found us.
I had to get the triplets to safety, no matter the cost.
But where could we hide when the darkness closing in was led by the very people who should protect us?
I grabbed the emergency bag I'd prepared for this moment and rushed to the triplet's room.
"Aria, Eryn, Caelum, wake up! We have to go now!" I whispered urgently.
Their sleepy eyes fluttered open, confusion etched on their tiny faces.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" Aria asked, rubbing her eyes.
"We have to leave. Get dressed quickly." I handed each of them a small backpack.
Eryn's eyes sparkled with excitement, her voice trembling with anticipation. "Adventure!" she exclaimed, her gaze gleaming with a sense of possibility.
But her enthusiasm was quickly put together with Caelum's fear, as he clung to my leg, his small voice trembling. "Mommy, I'm afraid."
I knelt down, wrapping my arms around him in a tight hug. "I'm here, baby," I said calmly. "We'll be safe. I promise."
Within minutes, we were out the door, into the darkness. The roar grew louder and closer.
Our small town, Raven's Peak, was surrounded by dense woods, home to various shifter packs. I had chosen this place for its solitude, but now it felt like a trap.
As we ran quickly through the forest, the triplets' breathing quickened. Their little legs struggled to keep up.
"Almost there," I reassured them, carrying Caelum.
A faint light appeared in the distance “indicating our escape vehicle”.
Suddenly, someone appeared from the darkness.
"Vynessa, don't do this," a familiar voice warned.
Kaidryn.
My heart almost stops breathing. What is he doing here?
"Kaidryn, stay back!" I warned, in a stern tone.
"Vynessa, please listen."
"No! You lost the right to explain when you rejected me."
His eyes squinted, and the moonlight highlighted the rough angles of his face.
"I was wrong, Vynessa. I know the truth now."
"The truth?" I laughed bitterly. "You know nothing."
With that, I turned and ran, the triplets clinging to me.
As we reached the vehicle, I locked the doors and sped away, leaving Kaidryn and the darkness behind.
But for how long?
The night had only just begun, yet our reality was already unraveling.
We drove along the twists and turns, the only sound heard was the hum of the engine and the triplets' murmurs.
"Mommy, where are we headed?" Aria asked, her eyes shining with anxiety.
"Somewhere safe," I replied, trying to reassure myself as much as I can.
But safety was an illusion.
As we sped away from Kaidryn and the darkness, the triplets' breathing slowed, their eyelids drooping.
"Mommy, I'm tired," Caelum mumbled.
Almost there, baby, I replied, my eyes fixed on the winding road ahead.
The GPS led us to a hidden motel. I checked in under a fake name and paid with cash to avoid a digital trail.
The room was modest and clean. I put the triplets to bed, with a tired expression on their faces.
As I watched them sleep, I thought back to how we got here.
Kaidryn's rejection of me.
The mysterious phone call.
And,
The howling in the woods.
Everything pointed to the same conclusion “that our secrets are no longer protected.”
"I breathed in deeply and tried to calm down."
Protecting the triplets would require all of my strength and might.
As I glanced through the window, the night appeared to shut in on us, threatening to suffocate us.
But I refused to back down.
For my children, I would fight.
No matter the cost.
The darkness outside seemed to pulse, a living entity waiting to strike.
I stood tall, and my resolve hardened.
Bring it on.
As I stood vigil, my thoughts drifted to Kaidryn. Why had he appeared tonight? Did he sincerely reject me?
Memories came flooding back: Kaidryn's breathtaking smile, our passionate romance, and the heartbreaking rejection.
I pushed them aside, focusing on the present.
The triplets stirred, their soft murmurs filling the room. I checked the locks, ensured the curtains were closed, and sat beside them.
Aria's eyes fluttered open. "Mommy?"
"Shh, baby. Sleep tight."
Eryn cuddles closer. "Mommy, are we safe?"
Yes, my love. We're safe.
Caelum's tiny hand was wrapped around mine. "Mommy, stay with us."
"I'm here, baby. Always."
As their breathing steadied, I gently extricated myself and began to plan our next move.
We needed a secure location, far from Raven's Peak and Kaidryn's influence. Somewhere to regroup and strategize.
My phone, now a burner, lay on the bedside table. No messages. Yet.
The silence was deceiving.
They have found us.
I knew it.
But I was ready.
Or so I thought.
A faint scratching at the door made me freeze.
With my heart pounding, I moved closer to the sound.
"Who's there?" I whispered.
No response.
The scratching grew louder.
My hand instinctively went to the knife sheathed at my waist.
The triplets stirred, sensing my tension.
"Aria, Eryn, Caelum, stay quiet," I warned, my voice barely audible.
The scratching stopped.
The door suddenly creaked open.
A figure slipped inside.
"Vynessa," a low voice whispered.
My knife flashed in the dim light.
"Who are you?" I thundered..
A woman with piercing green eyes stepped forward. "Don't you recognize me?" she asked, sounding sad. I shook my head.
"I'm Lyra, your sister."
My world tipped.
Sister?
Impossible.
Lyra fixed her gaze on me.
"We have a lot to discuss, Vynessa. And there's not much time."
"Lyra, what do you mean?" I asked, perplexed.
"I don't have a sister."
Lyra's gaze never wavered. "We're twins, we were separated at birth, Vynessa. Our parents…"
Stop!" I raised my hand, still holding the knife.
"This is insane."
Lyra's expression softened. "I know this is overwhelming, but please listen. Our family's history.."
"History?" I laughed bitterly. "You're talking about a family I never knew existed."
Lyra took a step closer. "Our bloodline holds secrets, Vynessa. Secrets that put your children at risk."
My grip on the knife tightened. "What do you know about my children?"
Lyra's eyes locked onto the triplets. "They're special, Vynessa. Like us."
"Like us?" I repeated, unease creeping up my spine.
Lyra nodded. "We're descendants of an ancient line, gifted with unique abilities."
I shook my head, denying the truth. "No, this can't be."
Lyra's voice dropped to a whisper. "You know it's true, Vynessa. You've seen the signs."
I remembered the triplets' special powers: Aria reads minds, Eryn is gifted with shape-shifting, and Caelum controls the elements.
"Who are you?" I asked firmly.
Lyra's eyes flashed with determination. "I'm here to help you protect them, Vynessa. And ourselves as well."
As I hesitated, Lyra pulled out a small device.
"GPS tracker," she explained. "Kaidryn's pack is nearby."
My heart dropped.
"Where can we hide?" I asked, feeling hopeless.
Lyra smiled grimly. "I've arranged a safe house. But we must leave now."
With Lyra's words, the room felt smaller, the shadows encroaching.
Could I trust this stranger?
Do I have a choice?
"Lyra, what do you mean?" I asked, my mind reeling.
"We share the same mother," Lyra explained, her voice soft. "You were taken from us, hidden for your protection."
My thoughts swirled. This was too much to process.
"Why reveal this now?" I demanded.
"Because you're in danger," Lyra replied, glancing at the triplets. "Your children...they're special."
"I know," I said, guarding my secrets.
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "You don't understand. They're the key to unlocking an ancient prophecy."
I squeezed, "What prophecy are you talking about?"
"The Return of the Gods," Lyra spoke softly, her voice barely heard.
My heart skipped a beat. "That's just a myth." I didn't believe it.
Lyra's gaze intensified. "It's real. And your children are the catalyst."
Suddenly, the scratching at the door made sense. Lyra wasn't here to harm us.
"Tell me more," I urged her.
Lyra hesitated, then said, "We've been secretly leading the shifters, but a rogue group wants to misuse the prophecy."
Kaidryn's rejection.
The mysterious phone call.
The howling in the woods.
All connected to this prophecy.
"Who's behind this?" I asked.
Lyra's expression turned grim. "Kaidryn's family."
My heart went into my shoes.
Kaidryn.
The man who had rejected me.
Now, his family hunts my children.
"What do you want from me?" I asked Lyra.
"I'll help you protect your children," Lyra replied. "Together, we'll uncover the truth and stop those exploiting the prophecy."
I studied Lyra's face.
Could I trust her?
The triplets stirred, sensing my unease.
"Aria, Eryn, Caelum, stay calm," I soothed.
Lyra's gaze locked onto mine.
"Vynessa, we're running out of time."
Suddenly, the room shook.
Windows begins to shatter.
The doors started opening
A snarling pack of shifters stormed in.
Lyra stood tall, a fierce determination burning in her eyes.
Please protect the children!
"Protect them," she shouted.
With that, she transformed into a sleek black panther.
The battle had begun.
