Pilot
Yelling at the yellow cab across the road and waving her hands in the air
“Taxi, taxi” in a rather high pitch, you could tell she was desperate as she had been on that spot for over 10 minutes waiting for a free cab.
She hopped right into the back seat of the taxi
“14 Cornelian street please” she said trying to catch her breath
“Okay” the taxi driver said as he started the meter while looking back at her through the center mirror
“You waited a while for a cab yeah” trying to start a conversation
“Yes” she said uninterested in having one
After about a 20 minutes ride she arrived at her work place but walked into the coffee shop right by the corner
“Good morning Diane” the barrister said with a large smile on his face, you could tell he was expecting her
“A good morning to you too Tom” she said smiling back
Tom was one of the few people who know about what happened but never talked about it. Who didn’t know? Bad news spreads like wild fire . After all he heard and confirmed, he knew talking about it would make her feel worse than she already did, instead he made her coffee before she came everyday as his little contribution to her healing journey.
“Here is your coffee” he said handing her a coffee cup with her name on it.
“Cream two sugars” she asked with smiles
“Of course” he replied like her regular order could ever leave his head
She opened her purse to pay for the coffee and as he said every other day
“This one is on the house Diane” Tom said
“Have a great day” he said winking at her
“You are the best Tom” she said as she quickly ran off into her office building.
Diane worked at a bank by Cornelian street called Great Monument bank. She was an investment banker in the organization and her main job description is to advice the company on investment plans, prospects and scout for good investment opportunities for the company. She had worked at the organization for 5 years, climbed the cooperate ladder smoothly and quickly too. She got her first promotion 2 years after she joined the company as she had a good eye for prospects. She made a lot of money for the company by encouraging them to take certain risk intensive investment options. She was good at analyzing data regarding terms and conditions for deals with the companies, one would think she has a legal background. She also started a loan-credit platform where an individual can get a loan using their payment slip in partnership with the company their work with. This gives the bank access to a particular amount of money from their salary for a stipulated amount of years up until the loan runs out. This was a turner for most people without a collateral to put down and earned her another promotion within a year. This promotion came with a corner office, a great view and her very own personal assistant.
She got into the elevator and pushed the 4th floor button. The elevator was always filled with people as she had to squeeze herself in. She could feel eyes staring at her in the elevator, but she sipped her coffee and pretended to not notice. The thought of exercising more by taking the less congested stairs always comes to mind when ever she was on the elevator . But then again she needed to avoid a lot of the pity looks that she gets from people along the way, sometimes she feels it would never go away no matter how long it had been. She exchanged pleasantries with the co- workers she met on the way to her office.
“Good morning ma” Tracy said in a rather high pitch as she worked towards her opening her door and trying to hold it for her to walk in.
Tracy was her secretary, she had a high spirit every single time of the day, one would think she has no problems. She was always excited in doing her duties that she crossed a lot of boundaries in the boss-subordinates relationship spectrum.
“Good morning Tracy how are you this fine morning” she said trying to fake a smile.
“ I am alright”
“I got this mail for you but it seems it came from this company, shouldn’t it have been a memo instead?” Tracy asked trying to open it
“No don’t open it, just hand it over” Diane said sounding agitated
“Okay if you say so” Tracy said dropping the letter on her table
“Are you okay?” Tracy asked while leaving the office and shutting the door
“It’s fine” Diane said as she walking across her deck to take her seat
“Oh crap!” she said in a really disappointing tune as she fell back into her seat after opening the letter.
Her mind immediately began to wonder and it fell on a particular day November 14, 2019
Diane started her morning by grabbing the sheets and trying to tug it over her head to prevent the light rays coming through the window from resting on her face. It was way too early for her to be getting up on her only free day within the week, after days of endless toils and surviving on a 4 hour sleep schedule. This wouldn’t have been the case if she decided to sleep in her very own apartment. Her fiancé Jayce had already folded up the curtains in his apartment which was a small tight one room with a sink by the far left and a few cabinets to serve as the kitchenette. The wash room was a small compartment just by the bed and it would barely fit more than one person at a time. The room had this particular scent which no one knew where it was coming from or what made it increase but overtime it became something Jayce had learned to live with and by association Diane too.
“Morning sunshine” he said from the chair at a little distance from the bed wearing just shorts and his signature grin that made her heart melt every single time he said that phrase.
Without any plans on getting up from the bed that early, she stood up and walked towards him wearing only his oversized shirt and nothing underneath. Her n*****s kept their perky shape which could pierce through the cotton shirt, more like two small knobs waiting to be pulled. The collar of the shirt could not be seen as her long wavy hair fell fully covering them.
She walked towards him from the bed and as she took every step you could see her curves showing even with theoversized shirt turned dress. With her hand on his wavy curt curls she pouted her lips and went in for a warm morning kiss.
In the smoothest possible way he moved his head gently and her lips fell on his cheeks right beside his lips.
“Sunshine you know I don’t like morning breaths” he said it with the calmest tune possible, who could ever get mad at such goodness.
“What’s for breakfast?”she said opening the fridge
“ You tell me he replied still wearing his signature grin”.
Opening the fridge she saw just a half drank packet of juice and an orange. She looked back at him with disappointment.
“Jayce you could buy your own groceries you know” she said
“But you do it so well” he replied trying to sound like a child standing up and walking closer to her
“Was actually waiting for you to get them for me, you know I love the way you arrange them and put those cute labels on them” he said running his hand on the outline of her spine then proceeded to grab her by the waist.
She actually bought everything for him ranging from his grocery to his clothes to his shoes and down to his toiletries. The first time he went to buy grocery for himself he kept calling her to ask her for the brand she buys and complaining on how everything is pricey at the mall she directed him to. You would think that he actually makes it easier by paying for all the expenses incurred but no he doesn’t. Diane didn’t see any problem with helping her man out, she had a better paying job and was more than happy to pitch in when necessary. But she did more than pitch in, she took up total responsibility for him. After two years of dating she wouldn’t say what he did for a living, he called himself an investor and always gave a vague reply when she asked for details, but honestly she didn’t care because he loved her and that’s all that mattered .
When he decided to buy a ring for her he got to the mall and handed over his credit card at the counter. After it declined the second time he didn’t hesitate to take out her credit card and hand over to the cashier. The ring cost $1500 but she was too excited about the ring that the fact that SHE WAS BUYING HER OWN ENGAGEMENT RING meant nothing in comparison.
She was brought back to earth from her long minutes lost in deep thought on how she got herself into that deep mess. She hadn’t thought of Jayce in a while but this loan repayment plan mail that was posted to her was enough to open all closed sores. She was about to start a payment plan for a house she wasn’t interested in, a life that was no longer hers and all these thoughts came crash landing on her. This was the house she was to move in with Jayce after the wedding, this was enough torture as the interest will keep rising rapidly.
