Chapter 1. Davandale University
Josh.
------------------------
Another day in paradise, good old university. Since the new laws have been passed by the government, humans and werewolves can now coexist in schools, universities, and work together, although it does come with certain rules for our kind and much harsher penalties. Some humans still think of us as a threat, but it's a huge step forward for our future. I am studying mechanical engineering because of my love for cars and, of course, motorbikes. And yes, I'm that typical tall, well-built, tatted-up guy who can be intimidating towards others. Can't do much about that, though.
"Josh! yelled out a familiar voice. I spun around and gave a sigh.
"What's up, Chase? I replied. Chase is my younger brother. He followed me to Davandale University like a lost puppy under the pretence that he also wanted to study mechanical engineering, but I know that it's because he didn't want to be left behind at home with the clan, as he usually gets picked on by the others due to his smaller build and his dorkyness.
"Have you thought about what you're going to do for your birthday this year? You'll be 26 soon, "asked Chase with his cheesy grin. I let out another deep sigh and shook my head. I don't celebrate birthdays. I find it inconvenient and annoying having everyone pretend they know me.
"Come on Josh, please have a party! ...... I need this" begged Chase as he lifted his hands into a praying position.
"Will you stop that? No wonder no one talks to you," I replied, moving his hands down quickly before any more people saw him.
"Sorry...." he replied, lowering his head with a sulk. I didn't want to give in, but this could be his chance to make some friends and stop hanging off me.
"Whatever, man," I said, folding my arms over my chest. Suddenly, I felt a hard nudge at my back. I turned my head to yell out in annoyance, but the person was already rushing off, human by the smell of it and a female, her soft vanilla scent still lingered even though she was now far from sight. I let out a low growl. Humans should watch where they are going. They truly annoy me, thinking that they are the smarter beings on this planet, yet they are slowly destroying it. Coming back into reality, I realized it was time to head to the workshop. Chase followed behind as we made our way to the workshop shed outside of the main building. Once we reached the roller doors, Frank, our mechanics teacher, was already in mid-announcement.
"We will be doing another major car service," he announced, glaring past the others towards me. Frank was particularly hard on me, but he also knows that I'm his smartest student, so being a little late won't hurt him.
(An hour later)
"That was a breeze," Chase whispered as he pushed himself up from the oil-stained concrete.
"That's because I did all of it," I replied, wiping away the grease from my hands onto my navy-blue slacks.
"Alright... great work everyone, time for a short break. I'll see you all in 15 minutes, sharp, " Frank announced as he took out a cigarette, disappearing towards the smoker’s tree.
I gave a quick nod to the others and made my way to the coffee van that was nearby, which happened to be perfect, as I wanted to avoid going inside the main building to the cafeteria at all costs. I already disliked mingling with humans, most of them have this certain smell that makes me physically sick. As I stood in line waiting for my order, I was suddenly pulled in by the smell of that soft vanilla scent from earlier this morning. I looked around and found a girl sitting under a shady tree nearby with her head buried in a book, sitting alone. Observing closely, I took notice that she wore clear framed glasses that were clearly too big for the size of her head, her blonde hair was in a low messy bun and she wore a t-shirt that was way too oversized paired with long plaided black and white pants. With all that extra material she was wearing, I couldn't make out her figure, which felt a little disappointing. Her soft vanilla scent sure didn't match her nerdy appearance, that's for sure. Sitting all defenceless like that, she'd be eaten alive in a clan like mine.
"Your burger is going cold, sir? a voice pulled me back from my thoughts. I realized that I was now the only one standing in line with a very confused employee waiting for my response and, of course, my money. I quickly paid and grabbed my burger. I began heading back to the workshop before Frank chewed my head off for being late a second time in his class today. Because of that thought, I now needed a cigarette. I took one out of my pocket and lit it up. I took in a few deep drags before I was suddenly interrupted.
"You know its bad to smoke" announced a random girl lying down on the grassy field. Of course, she was also having a cigarette. I tried to think of a smart-ass response.
"Clearly, it is only good for you" I replied, giving her a half smirk. The girl chuckled and sat up staring directly into my eyes.
"The name is Jennie. This is my second day here" she said, smiling.
"Jennie? as in Jennie Fork? I asked, leaning in to take a better look.
"The one and only, did you miss me? she asked, raising her voice a little higher.
"No actually, I haven't missed you and I still don't" I announced as I began to walk away, not even letting her have the chance to respond back. Jennie is an old 'friend' of mine, and when I say 'friend' I mean one with benefits. I did not expect to run into her here at Davandale university. And yes, Jennie is a human. Although she wanted to become a werewolf when we first met - that was going a few years back now. She was into all sorts of weird stuff, and I'm talking about witchcraft and rituals. I wouldn't have a clue what she was into now, and I didn't want to find out either.
Hope
-------------------------
This book is amazing. I am so glad that I rushed to the library this morning to grab it. When I read books, I feel like I can create my own world and get lost in it. It's the only thing that keeps me going through my Uni days. Yes, I may be called a nerd or even a weirdo, but I'd rather enjoy my own world than be fake trying to fit into others. I lifted my gaze from the book towards the main building only to catch a glimpse of someone staring directly at me from the coffee van. Isn't that the guy I accidently bumped into this morning? oops, I hope he doesn't have a grudge or something. That is the last thing I need right now. His sharp stare felt as though he was burning a hole straight through me. I suddenly became uncomfortable, and so I quickly reverted to my book to avoid any more unnecessary eye contact. Picturing him in my mind, he was quite attractive with a well-built body, someone clearly out of my league. He had tattoos covering both arms and one on the side of his neck, his navy slacks were covered in grease, and his black wavy hair was a mess, which meant only one thing: He's studying Mechanical Engineering. Those sorts of guys I want to stay far away from if possible.
I peeked over the pages of my book to realize that he had now disappeared. Phew, I can finally relax and breathe. I should be careful not to draw any more attention to myself from now on.
"Hope! screamed a very excited Sasha. Sasha was my only friend at Davandale. She was quite popular and had a lot of friends, someone who you wouldn't imagine being friends with a nerd like me.
"What is it? I replied, lowering my book back down onto my lap.
"I heard that there is going to be a party, everyone is invited. And you know what that means! You are coming with me." She announced with her signature smile. I let out a long sigh. There was no point in turning her down because if I did, she would keep nagging at me for days.
"Sasha.......I really dislike people. They make me nervous, but ....... if you insist I must, then I'll go for a little bit to make you happy," I proclaimed. That one word made her jump with pure glee like a child having their first taste of an ice cream cone.
"Yay! We will need to go shopping to get you an outfit, "she announced, placing her hands onto her hips as if she were my mother.
"No way, I said I'd go with you, but I didn't say I'd changed the way I look! I shouted, looking down at my clothes.
"PLEASE HOPE! she pleaded. I rolled my eyes and slowly stood up from the ground.
"When is this party? I asked impatiently. Sasha didn't respond using words but instead used her pointer finger. I instantly knew she meant it was the next day.
"Then it's a date! she proclaimed, grabbing hold of my arm and dragging me away from the tree. All I wanted to do was read my book in peace, but now she has me going on a shopping spree, all in the space of 10 minutes.
