Evelyn

As a kid, there was one place I always hated to go. The Dentist. I was always a fan of sugar. Cake, chocolates, cookies, ice creams and what not. On the top of it, I was one hell of a layabout. Well it all paid off when my first molar started to hurt like hell. Mr. Bradley, my 8th grade science teacher once told us that toothaches were the most painful of all aches. Well that day, I concurred with him. So I picked up my phone and booked an appointment at Dr. Nagashima’s for the coming friday, 10:00 am and when friday came, I was there on schedule. I looked inside, took a breath, and got in. “Umm.. excuse me, I have an appointment for 10:00 am” I asked the receptionist with confidence like I was a veteran in toothaches. “Your name, sir” “Miles.... Miles Baker” “Wait there sir” she said pointing at the couch “ Dr. Nagashima will see you in a moment.” Then she went inside, came out after a minute or two and long story short, I got and x-ray done and my left lower 1st molar had a cavity. “This looks like you’ve been ignoring it for quite some time Miles” The doctor spoke in a disturbing voice mixed with his Japanese accent. “Are you gonna take it out or something....?” “No, but it needs root canal treatment” “Is it gonna hurt” I didn’t realise it then how childish I sounded saying this. “We will anaesthesise you Miles” And so I got anaesthetised and got out to wait again and there she was. “Evelyn Moore” The receptionist called and she got up. 11th January 2019, the day I heard her name for the first time. I mean, have you ever heard those princess stories where they describe the girl like “ she was the fairest of all maidens in the whole kingdom”. Well she was just like that, “fairest of all”. She walked right passed me, smelling like lilies as she went inside. After a while she came back with a hand on her right cheek. “RCT?” I asked with my half paralysed mouth. “Mmhhmm” she nodded with her hand still on those lily petals of a cheek of hers. “Me too” I smiled. Pause. “First time” I asked “Yeah” “Me too” Silence. I was looking at her reflection in the glass table in front while she scrolled through her phone and finally the silence broke. “Miles Baker” The receptionist was looking at me. So, in I went. To be honest, I didn’t feel a think during the whole thing. I don’t know if it was the anaesthesia or was I too busy thinking about Evelyn to feel anything else. An hour passed and in that I had imagined twelve years with her. I know, I’m like that, mainly because of my inability to do things in real life. So I imagine stuff. It’s a pretty great escape from your incompetence, really. As I came out, she got up to get. I wanted to ask her number but wouldn’t that be awkward? We hardly talked and here I was thinking of asking her number, how bizarre? Anyway I was too afraid to do it and why would she like me, she was too pretty for someone like me. So I looked at her for the last time as she went inside. Then I got my next appointment for next Tuesday. Oh, how much I wanted her to have her next appointment on Tuesday too. But I knew my luck and it was never rewarding. So I came back with a heavy heart which is mostly pessimistic but in this case was being optimistic about seeing her again. But I needed to be rational about it. I mean, what were the odds of us meeting again?
