Midnight Betrayal
"No!" Mia screamed, struggling against the iron like grip of the sailors. There was one sailor for each limb, holding her high up from the wooden deck. Her charcoal black hair hung in messy tangles as she whipped her head around to see her attackers, but they wore clothes over their noses and foreheads. "Put me down this instant, or I shall have you all flogged." She snarled.
They didn't listen, one sailor took a hand off of Mia's arm and slapped her cheek, leaving a strange stinging sensation in place. A small whimper escaped her mouth as she desperately tried to squirm out of their vice grips, but to no avail. Just five minutes ago she had been peacefully sleeping in her itchy cloth hammock, dreaming of the beautiful place she'd heard of called Spain. Or was it Greece? Either way she'd heard tales of an... object that could be compressed into a golden liquid, but she wasn't entirely sure what it was used for. Fuel apparently, according to the cook.
And then she'd been rudely awoken by being dragged out of bed by these imbeciles. Throbs came from her stomach where she'd been punched, and she could feel a small trail of warm blood making it's way down her face. She let out a small yelp as she was unceremoniously dropped to hard wooden floor, bashing her head in the process. Dizziness overtook her as she lost all bearings and groaned. Blinking, she cleared her vision before looking around to see the sailors grabbing some rope and cannon balls. Fear enveloped her as she realised what was going to happen. Instincts kicked in as she clumsily shuffled away and scramble to her feet, feeling her foot kick something soft and pudgy; a low satisfactory moan sounded behind her, a grin spread across her lips before quickly disappearing again. She'd only made it about a meter, but something rough caught her foot. And before she knew it, she was flying forwards.
"Crap!" she squealed, feeling pain spread across her chin as a crack vibrated along her jaw. Blood pooled in her mouth as she felt her teeth crunch down on her tongue. The metallic taste was a strange new thing for her, and it froze her on the spot as she panicked.
"Get back here!" A low pitched voice harshly whispered. It sounded Scottish. Edward?
"Edward," she gasped, forgetting about the pain in her mouth for a second. Mia looked up into the eyes of the Ship's physician, looking for a reaction. Which she got. Edwards dull brown eyes seemed to be overcrowded with emotions: anguish, hatred, regret?
"Shut up Mia." He snapped, lunging forwards and slapping her cheek again, harder than the first slap only a minute earlier. She instantly grabbed her cheek and felt betrayal hold her heart tight, he was one of the men that she trusted with her life. A violent shiver ran through her as she glared at him straight in the eyes. "Just shut up, it's for your own good."
"I trusted you," she mumbled, feeling rope wind its way around her ankles, binding them together. It seemed that the betrayal had caused her to act almost paralysed, like the will to live had been put out like a flame on a candle. The rope felt uncomfortably rough against her bare legs, and it only tightened as she tried to squirm out of it. Then it was her arms, forcefully ripped away from her face and tied behind her back. She kept eye contact with Edward. A tear trailed down her cheek, cutting through some dried blood. There was no way out of a situation like this, all she could do was try to accept her fate, try to accept that she was going to be thrown overboard and drown. The other sailors began to tie up the weights to her ankles, making sure they were nice and tight. Mia saw the cannon balls out of the corner of her eyes, the black balls of death seemed to glare straight back. Edward glanced away and at the floor. "Look at me."
He ignored her and helped tie up the last cannon on her slim wrists.
"LOOK at me," She harshly whispered. He still didn't look at her. "What, you can't look into the face of someone you are about to murder? You coward."
Each of the sailors grabbed a limb again and hauled her up to the side of the ship, taking the extra care to make sure her hip violently bashed into the side. Pain surged through her leg as she cried out, letting a tear fall down her cheek.
"Please," She whimpered, Looking everywhere but the very long drop down to the ocean. She realized she wouldn't need to worry abut drowning, it was the impact that would kill her. This was ship was so far the biggest in the history of Britain, and that unfortunately meant that the drop was at least one hundred feet. The water would be like concrete. "No, no please. I don't want to die."
"It's bad luck for a woman to be on board a ship, we can't risk it sinking," Someone spoke, his voice seemed to be very posh sounding, like he came from somewhere around London.
"Then drop me off at the next port you insolent little rat!" Mia squealed, in complete disbelief at his stupidity. They were literally a days sail from the ports of Catania. "We are right next to Catania!"
"Shut up," Edward hissed, before pushing her a little so she almost fell off of the hard wooden edge. "We should just dump her now."
It was silent for a minute, and she could feel that they felt a little regretful about the whole situation. She felt strangely calm though, a mere minute ago she had been panicking like it was nobody's business but now she couldn't care less. In a way Mia just wanted them to do it, get it over and done with. A light breeze ran over her bare legs and arms, causing shivers to run along my spine. And then, as if that was the signal, they shoved her to her death.
Mia opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out, the rush of wind that met her face stole her voice. She could feel her throat tighten from an invisible hand, depriving her of oxygen as she felt the cannonballs weigh her down, making the fall even quicker.
Fear soared through her like adrenaline, consuming her thoughts as she neared the deep blue ocean.
The deep blue ocean she once saw as a comforting sight.
And then she blacked out, never to wake again.
