508 Words
Chapter 12 – A Bedroom Confession The safehouse was quiet. Julian closed the door behind them, locking three bolts with muscle memory. Rain ticked gently against the windows. A storm was building outside — and inside Ava’s chest. She didn’t say anything as she peeled off her jacket, blood still dried on the sleeve. She sat on the edge of the bed, gun in her lap, eyes locked on Julian. He leaned against the dresser, hands in his pockets, like he hadn’t just dragged her through a shootout. "Talk," she said. “No riddles. No games.” Julian nodded. “I’ll tell you everything. But once I do, there’s no going back.” Ava stared. “I crossed that line the moment I shot a man in a velvet bar.” He ran a hand through his hair. "Alright." He began. > “The program started before you and I ever met — you were recruited as a child. You don’t remember because they wiped the memory at sixteen. ‘Phase One.’ You were brilliant, Ava. Too brilliant. You started to uncover what Gideon was doing. So they reset you.” > “I was brought in after that — not as your lover, but as your control tether. My job was to monitor your behavior, steer your choices, keep you from breaking out of the loop.” > “But then you did. You fell in love with me. And I fell back.” Ava’s throat tightened. “So none of it was real?” He stepped closer. “It was real the moment I stopped reporting on you.” Her voice cracked. “And when was that?” He hesitated. > “The night you whispered my name in your sleep… and I couldn’t bear to send the file.” Ava looked away, blinking fast. “I should hate you,” she whispered. “I know.” She stood. Walked to him. Slowly. “I should kill you.” Julian looked her dead in the eye. “Then do it.” She pulled the gun from her waistband, pressed it to his chest. His heart beat steady beneath her palm. She was breathing too fast now. Shaking. Julian reached up, brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’ve lied. I’ve failed you. But I never stopped loving you,” he said. “Even when I was supposed to.” And then — like a dam breaking — she dropped the gun. And pulled him into a kiss that wasn’t just heat… it was war and surrender, grief and desire. They fell into the bed, tangled and wordless. For the first time in years, Ava let herself feel. But in the corner of the room, tucked in a vent above the mirror, a red light blinked silently. --- 🔥 End of Chapter 12 They gave in. Finally. But: Julian’s full confession only scratches the surface. Ava gave in to love — again. And just when she thought she had a choice… someone’s still watching. ---
