Episode 1: A Blissful Life Before Tragedy
The morning sun streamed through the large windows of the Smith family home, casting a warm glow across the living room. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Amos stood in the kitchen, flipping pancakes with a practiced hand. Ann sat at the dining table, sipping her coffee, reading the newspaper. Her eyes flicked over the headlines, but her thoughts lingered on the familiar hum of the house—how it was always alive with laughter, the sound of her daughters rushing to get ready for school, and the chatter that filled their evening meals.
"Do you think Amber will make it to school on time today?" Ann asked, breaking the silence with a knowing smile.
Amos chuckled as he carefully added a dollop of butter to the pancakes. "She'll be fine. She always is. Although, I do wonder if she and Jason are planning another one of those long picnics after school."
"She’s young," Ann replied softly, though her smile wavered just a bit. "Let her enjoy these moments. They grow up so fast." She paused for a moment, her thoughts drifting. "You know, sometimes I feel like I blinked, and here we are. Our girls are getting so big."
Amos set the pancakes down onto the plate with a soft thud. He walked over to his wife, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead. "And they’re turning out pretty well, if I do say so myself."
Their two daughters, Amber and Cristabel, were their pride and joy. Amber, the younger of the two, had inherited her mother’s striking beauty and had a way of drawing the attention of everyone around her. She exuded confidence effortlessly, and it seemed as though the world gravitated toward her. Cristabel, on the other hand, was a quieter soul. Though no less beautiful, she preferred to keep a low profile. She was a thoughtful, introspective girl who found solace in books, especially history, and had always been more content to sit with her nose buried in the pages of a novel rather than at the center of a social gathering.
As the sisters hurriedly got ready upstairs, the family home hummed with energy. Amber, dressed in her school uniform, raced down the stairs, her long hair flying behind her. She was practically glowing, a picture of youth and joy, and it was impossible not to smile when she entered a room.
"Jason’s waiting for me outside," Amber called out as she grabbed her backpack from the hallway, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "I’ll see you both later!"
"Have a good day, sweetheart!" Ann called after her, trying to hide the slight tinge of worry in her voice. She knew that Amber could sometimes get lost in her relationship with Jason, but at that moment, she chose not to mention it.
Cristabel emerged from her room a few moments later, a calm and composed figure in comparison. She had already packed her bag the night before, having spent hours reading her latest history book. She glanced at the clock and noticed that she was running a bit late, though it didn’t faze her. She always liked to take her time.
"Morning," Cristabel said, her voice soft but steady. She took a seat at the table, offering her mother a quick smile as she poured herself a glass of juice.
"Good morning, sweetie," Ann replied, brushing a lock of hair from her face. "Hurry up or you’ll miss the bus."
Cristabel waved her off, a small smirk curling on her lips. "I’ll catch it." She glanced at her father, who was still flipping pancakes. "Dad, can I take some for breakfast on the way?"
Amos chuckled, handing her a stack of pancakes with syrup. "Of course, just don’t spill it on your books. You’ve got history to study, don’t you?"
"Always," Cristabel said, her eyes lighting up as she took the pancakes. "You know I’m behind on reading the next chapter."
"Don’t stay up too late tonight, alright?" Ann added, her tone gentle but firm. "You need to get enough rest, especially with the tests coming up."
"I know, Mom. I’m going to take care of it." Cristabel's voice held an air of confidence, as if she truly believed in her ability to balance school and her passion for history.
As the girls made their way out the door, Amos and Ann stood in the doorway, watching them leave. The family was close-knit, always spending quality time together. Whether it was on vacations, enjoying educational story nights, or taking day trips to museums, they had built a life full of love and shared experiences. The girls often felt like they had everything they needed—their parents, their home, and each other.
Later that day, as Amber and Cristabel walked to school, Amber grinned. “I’m thinking about asking Jason to take me to that new restaurant after school. You should come, too. It’s on me.”
Cristabel raised an eyebrow, offering her sister a teasing smile. “You’re spoiling him, aren’t you?”
Amber laughed and nudged her sister playfully. “Maybe. But it’s fun. You should try it sometime.”
Cristabel shrugged, enjoying the banter. “I’m happy with my books. Anyway, I’ve got to catch up on some reading. You wouldn’t understand.”
Amber rolled her eyes, though affection for her sister shone in her gaze. "You’re such a bookworm," she teased. "Come on, live a little. Jason and I are going to a movie tomorrow. You could join us."
Cristabel smiled, but she wasn’t convinced. “Maybe, but for now, I’m happy walking to school with you.”
The bond between the two sisters was undeniable. Despite their differences, they had always supported one another. Cristabel had never been envious of Amber’s beauty or popularity. In fact, she admired her sister for the way she navigated the world with ease. Amber, in turn, appreciated her sister’s intelligence and thoughtfulness. They were polar opposites, but together they balanced each other out, and they were inseparable in their own way.
As they arrived at school, their paths diverged. Amber was quickly surrounded by friends, her beauty making her the center of attention wherever she went. Jason was already waiting by the gates, a smile on his face as he saw her approach. Meanwhile, Cristabel headed to her classroom, her mind already lost in thoughts of the next historical event she planned to study. Her group of friends, a small but close-knit group, greeted her with smiles and conversation about their shared interests. They were a quiet group, discussing everything from ancient civilizations to philosophy, and Cristabel felt at home in their midst.
But none of them could have predicted that this would be the last normal morning they would ever have.

The day unfolded like any other, until a phone call from the principal’s office shattered the calm.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of class, Amber and Cristabel received word that they needed to report to the principal immediately. Confused, they made their way to the office, unaware of the horror that awaited them.
When they entered the office, the principal, his face pale, stood by the desk, holding a phone receiver in his hand. The moment he saw them, he set it down and gave them a grave look.
“Girls,” he said softly, his voice trembling with the weight of what he was about to say. “I’m so sorry. There’s been an accident at your home.”
Cristabel’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?”
Amber’s face grew pale as she felt the sudden weight of the atmosphere shift. "Where are Mom and Dad?"
The principal cleared his throat, struggling to maintain composure. “Your parents… they didn’t survive the fire. There was an accident at your house this morning. They were trapped.”
The words hit like a blow, and everything around Amber and Cristabel seemed to blur. The grief, the shock, the disbelief—they couldn’t fully comprehend what had just happened.
Amber’s body went rigid, and she grabbed her sister’s hand for support, her voice barely a whisper. “No... no, this can’t be true.”
Cristabel stood frozen, her mind unable to process the news. Her parents, gone? The thought seemed impossible. It was as if the universe had just shifted, and nothing would ever be the same again.
