Chapter 1 : The Sacrifice Bride
In the year 1900, hidden deep within the misty mountains of Macedonia, there existed a village known as Moonlight Raven. The village was famous for its fertile land, silver rivers, and ancient traditions passed down through generations. At night, the moonlight reflected upon the dark rooftops, making the entire village glow like a sea of stars. But peace no longer existed there. For the past three years, a terrifying demon beast had descended from the northern mountains whenever the crimson moon appeared in the sky. It destroyed homes, burned crops, and slaughtered anyone who dared oppose it. The villagers lived in constant fear. At the center of the village stood Chief Darius, the leader of Moonlight Raven. Once a proud and fearless man, he now looked years older than his age. The burden of protecting thousands rested upon his shoulders. And tonight… he had to sacrifice the person he loved most. His daughter, Leah. The only daughter born into his bloodline in nearly a century. Leah had been born during the Year of the Dragon, and according to the ancient pact made generations ago, every daughter born under the Dragon Year must become the bride sacrifice to the demon beast—or the village would perish. The cold mountain wind howled violently as Chief Darius stared at his daughter standing beside the ritual altar. Leah wore a pure white ceremonial gown embroidered with silver threads. Her long dark hair danced beneath the moonlight while fear trembled within her emerald eyes. She was only sixteen years old. Too young to die. Too young to become the bride of a monster. “Leah darling… we can still stop this,” Darius whispered painfully. “I can offer the beast gold, livestock, even my own life instead of yours.” Leah turned toward him and forced a trembling smile. “No, father,” she said softly. “If someone must be sacrificed… let it be me.” The words shattered his heart. As a father, he wanted nothing more than to take her far away from this cursed mountain and never look back. But as chief, he carried the responsibility of every life in Moonlight Raven. Leah gently held his hands. “You taught me that the duty of our family is to protect the village,” she said. “If my death can bring peace… then I accept it.” Suddenly, a monstrous roar exploded across the mountain. The demon beast had arrived. Its body was larger than a castle, covered in black scales sharp as blades. Crimson eyes glowed like burning fire while massive wings blocked the stars above. The villagers trembled in terror. Darius instinctively stepped in front of Leah. “You will not touch her!” he roared. The demon beast narrowed its eyes. Then, unexpectedly, Leah stepped forward. “No, father.” She looked directly into the beast’s eyes despite her fear. “I will fulfill the pact willingly.” The mountain became silent. The beast observed her carefully. “What is your name?” the beast asked. “Leah.” The creature repeated her name slowly. “Leah…” Ancient glowing symbols suddenly appeared beneath Leah’s feet, and dark energy swallowed the mountain. When Leah opened her eyes again, she found herself inside an enormous palace made of black crystal. You are in my domain,” a voice echoed. Standing before her was not the terrifying beast—but a tall man dressed in black robes with silver hair and crimson eyes. “My name is Azrael,” he said. Leah stared in shock. “You… are the demon beast?” Azrael nodded silently. Over time, Leah learned the truth. Long ago, Azrael had once protected Moonlight Raven. But humans betrayed him, slaughtered his family, and hunted his kind. The pact had been born from hatred and revenge. Yet beneath his monstrous appearance, Leah discovered loneliness and pain. Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Slowly, fear between them faded. One snowy evening, Leah discovered ancient books hidden within the palace library. There she learned the truth: the sacrifices were never truly necessary. The curse could only be broken willingly by both humans and the demon beast through forgiveness. Before they could act, however, the villagers stormed the mountain palace to rescue Leah. War erupted. Flames consumed the mountains. Azrael transformed into his beast form once more as villagers attacked him in fear. “STOP!” Leah screamed desperately. But nobody listened. Then a flaming arrow flew toward Azrael. Without hesitation, Leah jumped in front of him. The arrow pierced her chest. Everything froze. Azrael caught her falling body while Darius collapsed in horror. “No… Leah…” Leah weakly touched Azrael’s face. “Please… end this hatred…” she whispered. Tears fell from Azrael’s crimson eyes for the first time in centuries. And in that moment, the ancient pact shattered. Golden light exploded across the mountains. The curse was broken. The villagers stared in shock as Azrael’s monstrous form slowly disappeared forever. Leah’s body suddenly became surrounded by warm golden light. Slowly… her wound healed. She opened her eyes once more. Alive. Darius cried with relief while the villagers fell silent. Leah smiled weakly. “The nightmare is over.” And for the first time in centuries, peace finally returned to Moonlight Raven—not through sacrifice, but through forgiveness. The peace within Moonlight Raven did not last long. Although the villagers slowly accepted Azrael after he saved the village from Malachar, one heart still remained consumed by hatred. Chief Darius. Leah’s father. Every night, he stood alone inside his chambers staring at the old ceremonial dagger once used during the sacrificial ritual. The silver blade reflected the candlelight like cold moonlight upon water. His hands trembled slightly—not from fear, but grief. To the villagers, Leah had returned alive after the curse was broken. But to Darius… the daughter who once laughed warmly beside him had already died the moment the dragon took her away to the mountain palace. The Leah who returned no longer belonged entirely to him. She belonged to Azrael. And Darius hated him for it. Deep within his heart, he blamed the Dragon King for stealing everything away. His daughter. His family’s peace. His pride as a father. Even the villagers had begun to admire the creature that once terrorized them. Whenever Darius saw children smiling at Azrael or villagers thanking him, bitterness twisted deeper within his chest. How could they forgive the monster responsible for years of suffering? One stormy evening, Darius sat alone drinking bitter wine when the chamber door slowly opened. “Father?” Leah entered quietly carrying a lantern. The moment Darius saw her, the coldness in his eyes softened slightly. “You should not wander alone at night,” he said. Leah smiled faintly. “You worry too much.” Silence filled the room. “I know you still blame Azrael,” Leah said softly. Darius’s expression darkened instantly. “He took you away from us.” “He saved me.” “He cursed this village!” Leah flinched slightly at the sharpness of his voice. Darius stood up abruptly. “You were supposed to have a normal life!” he shouted painfully. “A loving husband. Children. Happiness.” His eyes reddened with emotion. “Instead, you nearly died because of him!” Leah lowered her gaze sadly. “I chose this path, father.” “No,” Darius replied coldly. “That creature manipulated you.” For the first time in her life, Leah saw hatred burning inside her father stronger than reason itself. “You once taught me compassion,” she whispered. “What happened to you?” Darius remained silent. Because deep down… he knew the answer. Grief had changed him. The same grief that once transformed Azrael into a monster was now slowly consuming him too. Leah reached toward him gently. “Father, please let go of this hatred before it destroys you.” But Darius stepped away. “You sound just like him now.” Those words cut deeper than any blade. Without another word, Leah quietly left the room. Days later, rumors spread throughout Moonlight Raven about mysterious travelers entering the village at night. People whispered of cloaked figures gathering secretly near the abandoned church ruins. One midnight beneath heavy rain, Darius arrived at the ruined chapel hidden deep within the forest. Candles flickered inside the darkness. Several hooded figures stood waiting. The moment Darius entered, an elderly man stepped forward. “You came.” “Who are you?” Darius demanded. The old man smiled faintly. “Someone who also lost family because of dragons.” He removed his hood, revealing a scar running across one blind eye. “My name is Viktor. Leader of the Black Dawn Order.” Darius had heard whispers of them before. Dragon hunters. An ancient organization dedicated to exterminating magical creatures. “You seek revenge,” Viktor continued calmly. Darius clenched his fists. “What do you know about revenge?” Viktor walked toward the altar slowly. “Enough to understand your pain.” He turned around. “You hate Azrael because he stole your daughter’s future.” Darius’s jaw tightened. “He poisoned her heart against her own family.” Viktor observed him carefully like a predator sensing weakness. “You still see the truth,” he whispered. “The dragon manipulated everyone.” Rain thundered loudly outside the chapel. Darius looked away. “What do you want from me?” Viktor’s expression darkened. “We want the Dragon King dead.” Silence filled the ruined church. Deep within Darius’s heart, something stirred dangerously. “You would kill him?” “We have hunted his kind for centuries,” Viktor answered. He opened an ancient book filled with forbidden symbols. “The Spear of Vhalor,” Viktor explained. “Forged from dragon bones and cursed silver.” The illustrations showed a black spear surrounded by glowing chains. Darius hesitated. A voice inside him screamed this was wrong. But another voice—filled with grief and rage—whispered louder. Azrael deserves punishment. Viktor stepped closer. “Help us lure him into a trap.” Darius looked toward the storm outside. Then he remembered Leah crying on the mountain during the sacrifice. He remembered helplessly hearing her scream when the dragon took her away. Slowly… hatred overcame reason. “What must I do?” Meanwhile, unaware of the danger growing around them, Leah and Azrael stood together near the frozen lake beyond the mountains. Snow gently fell around them. Leah laughed softly as Azrael awkwardly attempted to help her fish through the ice. “You’re terrible at this,” she teased. Azrael frowned seriously. “I once ruled armies.” “And yet you cannot catch one fish.” He sighed dramatically. “This is clearly more difficult.” Leah burst into laughter. For a moment, Azrael simply stared at her quietly. “What?” Leah asked. “…Nothing.” His gaze softened. Because after centuries of loneliness, these peaceful moments felt more precious than immortality itself. Suddenly, a sharp pain struck Azrael’s chest. His eyes widened instantly. Dark energy. Bloodlust. Someone was using forbidden magic nearby. Azrael immediately stood up. “What’s wrong?” Leah asked worriedly. Azrael’s expression turned grim. “…Someone is hunting me.” Far away within the ruined chapel, Chief Darius tightened his grip around the cursed spear while Viktor whispered darkly beside him: “The Dragon King’s death begins tonight.”
