Prologue
Some nightmares don't end when you wake up.
Mine always began the same way.
I was running.
The cold night air burned my lungs as I raced through endless stone corridors drenched in blood. My bare feet slipped on the crimson floor, but I couldn't stop. Behind me, screams echoed through the castle, growing louder with every heartbeat.
Someone was hunting me.
I didn't know who.
I didn't know why.
I only knew that if they caught me, everything would end.
I burst through a pair of enormous silver doors and stumbled into a moonlit courtyard.
The sight before me stole my breath.
Bodies covered the ground.
Broken swords, shattered shields, and crimson roses lay scattered across the battlefield as snow drifted silently from the sky.
Above us, a blood-red moon watched like an unblinking eye.
This wasn't just a nightmare.
It felt like a memory.
"My Queen."
The voice came from behind me.
I turned.
A tall man dressed in a black coat stood only a few steps away. His dark hair moved with the icy wind, and his crimson eyes locked onto mine with a mixture of relief and heartbreak.
He was breathtaking.
Terrifying.
Familiar.
He looked at me as though I was the only person left in the world.
"I found you," he whispered.
Something inside my chest ached.
I knew him.
I had never seen him before.
Yet somehow, I knew him.
I took a step toward him.
"Who are you?"
Before he could answer, a deafening explosion shook the castle.
The ground split apart.
Dark shadows poured from the cracks like living smoke.
Another man emerged from the darkness.
Unlike the stranger with crimson eyes, this man's gaze was as black as midnight.
Power radiated from him.
His smile was cold.
Cruel.
"I've waited centuries for this moment," he said.
He slowly raised a blood-red sword.
"You cannot escape destiny."
Fear gripped my heart.
The man with crimson eyes stepped protectively in front of me.
"You'll never touch her."
The two men charged at each other.
Their swords collided with enough force to shake the heavens.
The crimson moon cracked.
A blinding light exploded across the battlefield.
I screamed.
Then...
I woke up with a scream lodged in my throat.
My bedroom was dark.
My heart pounded so hard it hurt.
Cold sweat soaked my pajamas as I struggled to catch my breath.
It was three twenty-three in the morning.
Again.
Every nightmare ended at exactly the same time.
Every single night.
And somehow...
I knew tomorrow would be different.
