Behind Her Smile — Episode 1
Elena woke up before sunrise again. The small staff quarters were silent, except for the faint ticking of the wall clock and the distant hum of the city outside. She sat up slowly, pressing a hand to her face for a moment before swinging her legs off the bed. A nurse’s life didn’t pause for emotions. Not even hers. She changed into her uniform carefully, smoothing it down like she was also smoothing her thoughts. On the table beside her bed was a small photo of her mother and a half-written note she never finished reading out loud. From her phone, a reminder flashed: Morning shift General ward. Elena exhaled and forced herself into routine. At the hospital, she became “Nurse Elena.” Calm. Professional. Always smiling. Patients liked her because she spoke softly even during busy hours. Other staff respected her because she never complained, even when the ward was full and the pressure was heavy. But no one saw what she carried inside. During a short break, she sat alone in the staff room, staring at her phone. There were no missed calls yet but her eyes kept drifting to it anyway. Her mother was still in the same condition. Stable… but fragile. That word had started to scare her more than anything else. “Elena!” a colleague called from the hallway. “We need you in bed 4!” She immediately stood up, pushing everything aside. No hesitation. No delay. That was her life. But as she walked down the corridor, something felt off. A doctor passed her with a serious expression. Two nurses were speaking in low voices near the nurses’ station. Elena’s steps slowed. Something had changed. And she could feel it before anyone even said a word. Because in hospitals… silence is never just silence
