(Aya) I GLANCE at Trei before answering the call. “Aya.” The sound of my mother’s voice brought warmth throughout my body. “Mom.”  I see in my peripheral vision that Trei freezes when he realizes who is in the other line. He looks down and continue to eat. It’s as if giving me privacy when we are too close not for him to hear me talk to my mom. I’m still thankful for the gesture but I don’t tell him that. Instead, I focus on my mother. “What is it? I’m in school.” “Oh. I called to tell you I just got home. I decided to go home one day earlier.
