The Class I Despise
I heard someone saying my name, but I couldn't tell who it was at first. I pulled myself out of my dreamy state and look up. My eyes meet those of Mrs. Darcy. She's like a damn banshee, because I heard her in my dream. She definitely didn't belong there.
I smirk and respond in my best smartass tone. "May I help you, Mrs. Darcy?"
She slaps her hand on my desk and gets so close to me that I can smell her garlic breath from lunch. Barf, how about a breath mint.
"If you don't start acting right, you will have detention every day for the rest of the school year."
I rolled my eyes, handed her a piece of gum and got up to read my speech. I figured it was my turn. The speech is supposed to be about someone or something that changed your life forever.
*ahem*"As some of you may know, I have never been someone who has a lot of friends, if any. Although, that is very true, I have one person that has been with me since I was in kindergarten. She not only changed my life forever, but she continues to change my life everyday. I'm not only going to speak about her, though. I will also be speaking about an event that changed the both of us.
To understand the story, I'll need to start from the beginning. Alice and I met when we were five. We have been inseparable ever since. We even have the same birthday. I was struggling with losing my aunt in the second grade and she was there. When Alice lost her pet gecko, I was there. We had to be there for each other when we turned 10 because of afore mentioned event. Alice's parents got into a car accident and she had to come live with me and my parents. Shortly after, my mom died from leukemia. We haven't been the same since, and I think God everyday that we have each other, because if not, I wouldn't be standing here today. I wouldn't be reading a speech that I wrote with my eyes full of tears, I wouldn't have gotten the chance to have all of the memories I carry around with me. I would've never had my first kiss or gone to my first school dance. Alice would have nobody. So, in the end, those events that I commonly clump into one, have changed my life for the better and I hope all of you know that you can't have happiness without sorrow."
I look around the room and see girls clutching their chests and tears falling down their cheeks. Mrs. Darcy even looks like she might need a few days off. Mission accomplished.
"Thank you."
I walk back to my seat and let my awesome speech sink in. The bell rings and I walk out of my classroom and towards my favorite person with a smile only reserved for her. I see that perfect woman standing by her locker chatting some other friends. I put my arm around her delicate shoulder and feel her relax into me.
Alice looks up at me with her gorgeous emerald eyes and smiles at me like I hung the sun. She continues her conversation before we head home. I watch as she stands there in utter perfection. Alice stands at 5'6", has gorgeous sun kissed skin, plump red lips, a small-ish nose with a dainty purple hoop in it (left side), breasts that are right in the middle of sizing (probably a C), long auburn eyelashes, hair that's a deep auburn but shines in the sun, a beauty mark on her jaw line (the right side), adorable dimples in both cheeks, and a butt that is perfectly squeezable.
As I'm zoning out on her gorgeous, slender hand playing with her hair, Alice nudges me with her elbow.
"Oh, sorry, what?"
"I asked if you want to go to the party tonight with me, Zander, Kelly, Dan, and Summer. Want to? Please?"
I look at her like she's torturing me, but I'm just joking.
"Okay, fine, but we need to get going or dad is gonna have our asses. See you guys tonight."
I close her locker, start walking with her in tow, and wave goodbye to our friends. Alice snuggles into me as a way of saying thank you. I can feel her staring at me as I guide us out the door and to my car. I don't what she's looking at. I don't consider myself good looking.
I'm 6'2" with pale skin and freckles everywhere. I have two lip piercings and the classic shaggy hair that's closely associated with stoners. My hair is a boring dark brown and my eyes are blue, almost silver. I'm not overly muscular, but not rail thin. I don't play sports, I just take art and theater. I'm not what most would call hunky.
I shrug at my psycho babble and Alice looks at me confused.
"What's wrong? Do you not want to go tonight?"
"No, no, I'm okay with going as long as we go together. I was just shrugging at my psycho babble. Nothing serious."
"Well, sir, we will be 17 in a few days and towards the end of our sophomore year. Only one month to go until we're officially out for the summer. So, enjoy late night parties whole they last because pretty soon we'll be partying all day." She has excitement in her eyes when she gets in the passenger side of my black Toyota Corolla.
She hooks up her phone to the bluetooth after an extensive argument and me giving in. Anything to see her smile.
We pull into McDonald's on the way home to get her a 10 piece nugget meal with honey for dipping sauce and a coke. I get a Big Mac meal with Mac sauce for my fries and a Dr. Pepper. Dad hasn't been himself since Mom died even though it's been 7 years. So, I usually cook dinner. I just didn't feel like it tonight. I have a pretty good job so I definitely had the extra money.
We act normal at school because we don't want people to know that my dad travels all the time for work and it's usually just us at home. After all, he started doing that when we were 10 1/2 years old. So, yeah.
