CHAPTER ONE — CLAIMED ON CHRISTMAS EVE
Snow fell in soft, glittering sheets, coating the street in silver. Mira didn’t feel the cold at all — not when her chest burned hotter than the December wind. She stood frozen outside the cabin she’d decorated with her own hands, staring at the window where soft Christmas lights glowed…and where she could clearly see her boyfriend pressed against another girl. Her best friend. Her breath shattered in her throat. She didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She simply turned away, boots crunching through the snow as she walked blindly into the dark forest behind the lodge. The wind stung her cheeks, but she welcomed the pain — anything to drown the twisting in her chest. She didn’t notice the wolf at first. A massive shadow moved between the trees, silent as midnight, following her steps. Watching. Protective. Dangerous. Mira only noticed when she stumbled, caught herself on a frozen branch, and felt a growl vibrate through the air. A shape emerged — tall, broad, carved from darkness. His coat was thrown open despite the cold, his body radiating heat like a furnace. His eyes glowed gold in the moonlight. Not Human. Not fully. “Why are you crying?” His voice was deep, rough, like a storm breaking open. “I’m not,” she lied, wiping her face and stepping back. “I don’t know who you are, but—” “You do.” He took one step, and she felt it in her bones. “Your scent has been calling to me for months.” Her pulse tripped. He reached out, brushing his thumb across her cheek, slow and deliberate. Electricity shivered through her skin, sinking deeper than touch — something ancient, instinctive, impossible. “You shouldn’t be out here alone,” he growled quietly. “Not when you’re hurting. Not when you’re mine.” “M-mine?” she whispered. He lowered his head, inhaling the warm skin beneath her ear. Her knees nearly buckled. “Yes. Mine.” His voice was a promise and a warning. “Your heart broke tonight. I felt it snap through the bond.” She stared at him, breath shaking. “What are you?” He lifted her chin with gentle, unyielding fingers. “Your mate.” Heat flooded her chest — fear, disbelief, desire. She should have run. She didn’t. He stepped closer, so close she felt every part of him: the warmth, the hunger, the restraint he was barely holding. “Tell me who hurt you,” he murmured, “and I’ll make sure he never touches you again.” “No,” she breathed, grabbing his coat. “Don’t—you don’t have to fight him.” The Alpha’s eyes darkened. “I’m not fighting for him.” His fingers slid to the small of her back, pulling her against him in one smooth, claiming motion. “I’m fighting because someone dared to wound what’s mine.” Her breath hitched. His scent — pine, smoke, pure male heat — wrapped around her like a spell. “Why…why do I feel like this?” she whispered. “Because your soul knows me.” He leaned in, lips brushing her jaw, teasing her skin with warmth that made her tremble. “And your body is remembering me.” Her hands curled in his shirt. “I don’t even know your name.” He smiled against her throat — a wicked, satisfied smile. “Call me whatever you want, little mate. You’ll be screaming it soon enough.” Her heart flipped violently. His hand slid to her waist, firm, possessive. His breath warmed her ear. “But not here.”He lifted her as if she weighed nothing. “I’m taking you somewhere safe before I lose the last bit of control I have left.” “M-my place—” “No.” His voice dropped to a husky growl. “His scent is still there. I won’t touch you anywhere another man has touched you.” The snow swirled around them as he carried her deeper into the forest — toward the glowing outline of a secluded cabin she hadn’t noticed before. She clung to him, her pulse wild, her body heating with every step he took. This wasn’t safety. This was surrender. This was destiny. This was being claimed by a wolf on Christmas Eve.
