CHAPTER FIVE “You can see that the fabrics we got fr them this time have low quality unlike what they usually deliver” the worker leading Ava around the textile factory said, Ava jotted down seriously on the clipboard she was holding, her eyes trained on the large rolls of fabrics that were spread out on the floor. “Then you stop buying from them, continuing business with them will only incur losses on us and we don't have the funds for that” Ava said with a frown on her face. “I tried telling the boss but he won't listen, the boss of the supplying company is an old friend of his” the worker said . Ava almost rolled her eyes at this, her father was a sentimental and sacrificial person. He was the type who would displease himself just to please others and this was one of the main reasons why the textile company hadn't been able to go beyond a domestic level. “I'm giving the orders now, all trading with them would stop instantly” Ava ordered . “But ma…” “Do as I said, else you want to be the one to pay for any losses incurred” Ava spat out. The man shut his mouth and lowered his head timidly. After Ava was done looking at the fabrics warehouse, she asked to be taken to where all the textiles were dyed. “Are you sure mam? The scent of the chemical from the dyes can be quite nauseating, even I myself can't bear it sometimes' ' the worker who was acting as her tour guard advised her against it but she glared at him. They walked to the dying yard slowly, they were still a few miles away and Ava could already perceive the scent, it was almost like something I'm her tummy was stirring in response to the unpleasant odor. She gagged loudly, rushing to a corner to puke but she threw up nothing. “Should we leave now Ma, I told you that the odor can be offensive” he said, handing her a bottle of water she would use in rinsing her mouth. “You didn't tell me that it would be this terrible” she complained, taking a gulp of the water and spitting it out. The worker lowered his head, not wanting to say much, he led Ava back to the office where she would stay for the rest of the day before going back to the company. Ava followed behind, looking around the factory, this was her first time come to the factory and she needed to know the real situation here and it would help in decision making Just then, her step wobbled slowly and she missed her pace. There was a ringing sound in her ear as the world around her began to spin crazily. She tilted towards the floor and the last thing she heard before passing out was the loud screams of the employees and their call for help. © © The beeping sound of the electrocardiogram and the sniveling voice of her mother was the first thing Ava heard when she opened her eyes. Then the sight that awaited her was blindingly pure white ceilings, almost like a place in the bible “Mom…where am I, am I in heaven?” she asked, her voice coming out her throat hoarse. A chuckle was forced out of Eve's mouth “silly girl, this is not heaven, you are in the hospital” She said, patting her hair. “Hospital…how come, all I can remember is…” memories of how she had fainted in the factory washed through her head and she sighed. “I hope it's not a terminal sickness though” “What sort of stupid thing is going through your head, you just fainted , probably because you have been too stressed out these days, the doctor hasn't said anything yet” Eve chided. Ava nodded her head, leaning on the bed comfortably . “Oh see my forgetful brain! The doctor asked me to call him once you are awake” Eve said, standing up from the chair she was sitting on. “Don't forget to get me warm water when you are coming back” Ava said. Eve nodded her head and rushed out of the room. Ava looked around the bleak hospital room, her heart wrenching in pain, she remembered when she was still in a relationship with Joseph, then she was sick and was rushed to the hospital. Joseph had hovered over her throughout her stay, when he found out that she was scared of the color white he had bought her favorite red rose flowers and had used it to decorate the ward. Two trickles of tears rolled down her cheeks unknowingly and.she hurriedly cleaned it off, almost as if she was burned by the warmth of her own tears. The door knob twisted and the door swung open, Eve and a man wearing a spotless white coat walked in, following behind him were two nurses holding a tray filled with syringes and medications. “Glad you are awake” the doctor said immediately as he walked in, a small smile on his face. Ava stared at him as if he was some sort of strange creep. The nurse set down the tray on Ava's bedside cabinet before going to check on the IV that was connected to her arms. She nodded at the doctor, signifying that everything was in order, the man cleared his throat before staring squarely at Ava. “Where's your husband? His presence is needed here” the doctor said. “Husband? I'm not married doc! Whatever gave you that impression”Ava said, weakly waving her hand “well apart from a failed near husband” she laughed but when she saw that the doctor looked serious she frowned. “What's going on doctor?” Eve was t he one who asked. “Your daughter here is pregnant, 4 weeks to be exact”
