Jaxon’s POV:
Because why not? On top of everything, I had to fight my mate.
“Now Eva, take it easy on him” stated alpha Kane. Some of the pack laughed but none of the ranked members did.
Why moon goddess? Why?
She squared her shoulders, fists closed and looked at me with fire in her eyes. I didn’t make a move. “I won’t fight you”
“Wow, you’re so arrogant you think that a training exercise counts as fighting.”
“I won’t hit you, you’re my mate.”
“Right, now you remember that,’ she swings her right fist to my face. I dodged it easily. She quickly followed up with a combination of jabs and kicks, so that I had to jump, roll and block. She’s fast. I smile. My mate can fight.
“Fight!” She threw a kick punch combination. I stepped back from the kick, dodged the punch, but she used that momentum to take me down. She straddled my chest and started throwing an assault of punches at my face.
“You know this would be better if you stopped trying to hit me," I stated, which seemed to infuriate her more. Having had enough, I easily reversed the position to have her under me with both of her hands in one of mine pinned above her head. Her chest heaving, “Let go!”
“Take it easy mate, I will never fight you.”
“Let me go”
“Will you calm down if I do?" Nodding, I got up and reached out a hand to her. Ignoring me, she got up, squared her shoulders, threw two jabs and a cross that I dodged but landed a kick to my abdomen. Pushing me back, drawing a few whispers from the the crowd.
“Good job, so everyone partner up and start,” interrupted alpha Kane. I’ve never been so happy to have a fight stopped. She looked at me, then alpha Kane and left the training grounds. I quickly followed her, calling her name. She continues walking. I reached for her arm, “5 minutes? Please.”
She stopped briefly, I fell in step next to her and we continued walking.
Eva’s POV:
“I’m sorry that I didn’t accept the bond when I met you,” he started.
I didn’t say anything, “ I have always wanted a mate, but I wasn’t sure if I would be a good mate.”
“What does that mean?”
“My father was a great alpha, but he was not a good mate,” he paused.
“One of the reasons that my pack is so large is because, when we were founded over 300 years ago, making us one of the oldest packs in the world, we were the Blue River pack. There was a land dispute with a nearby pack. The alpha of that pack challenged the then alpha of Blue River. The Blue River alpha won, so our pack doubled in size, but the alpha who lost would not submit and was killed. Turns out his mate was a witch who blamed Blue River. She cursed the males in my family to have our mates die heinously at our hands after mating, so that we know what she felt.”
This is a lot to take in. I stopped walking and turned to him. “You’re saying, you are destined to kill me?”
“Maybe.” Now I am so confused!
“Let me explain,” he continued, “after a few generations, a white witch who joined our pack tried to break the curse. She failed. But what happened is that the curse started to skip generations.”
“That’s a good thing, right?”
“It is not always guaranteed that it will skip a generation or that the curse will be triggered once we are mated.”
“So, because of a curse that may or not skip a generation, you pushed me away?”
“Yes, my father killed my mother. That destroyed him completely and has pushed my sister away from our pack. I cannot do that to my mate.”
My heart hurts for him. “Don’t I get a say in this?”
“Of course,”
“Who else knows?”
“My whole pack knows, but only Nate, Taylor and Trisha know I have found my mate.”
“So you don’t want a mate?”
“I do, I want you, I just don’t want to hurt you. more.”
“Hurt me, more? Let’s see you take me home, on your packlands, when you ALREADY HAD A LUNA!”
“I do not.”
“Naked she-wolf in your bedroom, calling "'you baby'" says otherwise.”
“Trisha”
“Fitting name.”
“Eva, I have known Trisha my whole life, we were together, I won’t deny it, but she was never my luna.”
“You never promised to make her luna?”
‘Never.”
I started walking again and followed. He followed.
“Eva, I am very sorry for my behavior. I should not have let you walk. I should have gone after you.”
“I understand your family curse, but you could have talked to me, you let me believe that I wasn’t good enough for you, that, that will take sometime to get over.”
He stopped in front of me, his hands on my arms. I can feel the tiny sparks calming me.
“You didn’t deserve that, you don't deserve that. Please let me make it up to you.”
“Jaxon,”
“Give me a chance to show you that you are more than enough, that it was always who I was searching for.” His eyes were pleading with me to say yes. Can I say yes?
Yes we can, chimed Priya.
He needs us and we need him.
“Look Jaxon, I appreciate you telling me the truth and opening up, but you almost broke us before we even started. That's not on me. You did that.”
“I know,” he let go of my arms. We stood there quietly.
“There’s a lot to think about,” I finally said. “Why don’t we talk later?”
“Come to my pack with me?”
“What!?”
“Come with me, give me two weeks. No pressure, come see Darkwoods. Let me show you what it’s like there and give me a chance to really make it up to you.”
Two weeks in his pack? We are not ready for that.
Give him a chance to apologize.
Yes, Priya, I know you’re happy he wants us but he hurt us.
He was stupid, but I believe he is really sorry.
“If, after two weeks, you still hate me, you can reject me and I will accept it, if that is what you decide.”
“Two weeks?”
“Yes, what do you say?” He asked, his eyes looking hopeful.
I looked around to see that we were near the packhouse and I knew there were prying eyes everywhere.
“Okay, but I am not going anywhere until you properly meet my family.”
